How do I find out if I have a VM CPU chip? Do I have to go to the AMD site and run diagnostics?

What do you mean with VM?

Virtual Machine capable CPU. There is the VM option in BOINC 7.2.28. Your computer can emulate a different computer's CPU operations. You could run your computer as a Pentium 1 or some other CPU.
----------------------------------------SEL Guess that it is more than that; can run many Virtual OS's at the same time and can also emulate other hardware, like floppy disk drives, etc. . .. With AMD, would need to have an AMD-V (Pacifica) chip (Wikipedia). SEL They would be useful if a scientist wanted to try to reproduce the results of an experiment that had occurred in the past on legacy hardware, among other uses (could use for designing new hardware systems). I don't have a V chip, so I will let that go. SEL [Edit 3 times, last edit by SuDu2 at Nov 18, 2013 11:23:14 PM] |

Let's set the record straight on this and your previous post: Upgrading from 6.10 to any recommended 7.0 (was 64) or 7.2. (28) is -lossless-. Only the very early 7.0 alpha mangled tasks on host during upgrade. The run-cache-dry-first cycle looses lots of computing time, the longer the tasks are, the more cores there are, so why waste time on managing that? Anything lost will be reissued to another host, ASAP. As for the VM, there's a curious line by the chief Berkeley developer to have as many pick the BOINC VM installer version as there can be. Not at all in the know if such environment [VirtualBox] is dependent on the virtualization feature I for instance can activate on my I7. It is something which makes it easier for project owners to launch an application and then just having to do that in one version, a *nux environment e.g. Think that's a burning bridge too far for the bulk of the volunteers [and still shrinking at a scary pace, global all BOINC from 246K active users in mid September to now 236K active users... 10K in 2 months]. Anyone any idea how to stem that weatherfront?. edit: spell [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 19, 2013 10:59:28 AM] |

As nobody has missed, those that wanted to know, WCG passed on 7.2.28 and is probably waiting on at least that sub-second throttle feature [not seen an actually check-in yet... much effort presently into VBOXbuilds], but another code entry peaked my interest:
client: generate host CPID as a function of MAC address This makes the host CPID stable; if you repeatedly install BOINC on a particular node, it will get the same host CPID each time, and your host table won't get lots of redundant entries. A host can have multiple NICs; we use the MAC address of the first Ethernet controller we find, or the last NIC if there is none. Of course, this will create problems if we get the same MAC address for different hosts; in principle this shouldn't happen. Remove the unused file hostinfo_network.h Is this the end of the never ending stream of 'new' devices we all have due reinstalls [absent merge feature]? Meself, my count is now 52 devices with one or more results... really got 4, and only because of dual booting ;P |

And so it came...
Starting with version 7.2.28, the recommended BOINC installer for Windows also installs VirtualBox, open-source virtualization software. This allows volunteered computer to run VM applications, benefitting both scientists and volunteers. Set the spell-checker to US-English and it still balked at the quoted text... fitting. |

That did not help, much. When I went to download 7.2.28, I read that it might be better to use Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) so as to get more SW and libraries; I went ahead and got the SPM and added nearly all of the SW offerings with the installation. To make a long story short, I got a bunch of stuff that has interfered with the OS (locked files) and configuration/proxy issues. I had to create a password to something during installation, not quite sure as to what (possibly MYSQL), but the password that I entered was too long, according to the MYSQL documentation--so possibly a password to some other SW.
----------------------------------------I ran a new download and tried to install, but Terminal states that I already have the latest version (7.0.27 x86). This version is operating well enough. Terminal also notified me that I have 3 packages that have now become obsolete and that I should remove them through "apt-get autoremove", but I can't remove them with the " sudo " privileges because they are locked. They don't appear to be hurting anything but disk space, I suppose. No real need to remove them. Also, as an inherited problem by downloading the SW packages, I have been thrown into the Emac23 program when double clicking on the saved download of 7.2.28 in attempt to install. I now need to figure out how to use Emac? No problem--I got the old BOINC running again after suspending projects: by Terminal command of " sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client start " and it worked to get it going again. I still have no process running of " boinc-client " in System Monitor. Should I be concerned that the boinc-client process does not show in System Monitor? SEL Why should I be in need to edit the shell? Just checked the Emacs buffer. SEL [Edit 4 times, last edit by SuDu2 at Nov 20, 2013 1:07:50 AM] |

As I mentioned near start of this thread as coming soon, a sub-second throttling version, 7.2.29, has just been released for testing. Those who currently use the throttle feature of BOINC to keep their notebooks etc running cooler [default setting like 50-60% of CPU time] are invited to give this a go [don't do this if you're not comfortable with testing versions!]
----------------------------------------Present 60% Throttle experience [as set via the % of CPU time preference]: run 3 seconds, pause 2 seconds [synchronous on all BOINC threads last I looked] New 60% experience: run 0.x of a seconds, pause 0.y of a second. In past BOINC throttling could lead to application freezes, though the developers seem to have overcome that problem mostly. This is an area to be aware of and calling for urgent reporting. 3 gains from this improvement: 1) Works on all platforms. ** 2) Better thermal balance in the CPU [brief cooling periods] 3) Watching Task/System Process manager wont lead you to see Hacksaw Jim at work... the performance/load graphs, since sampling is default about every second, are anticipated to be smooth-er. Please test and who knows will this lead to WCG actually adopting a new version [and seeing the many many, many many localization updates relating to base language and translations between 7.2.28 and .29, that too will be included]. W64: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.2.29_windows_x86_64.exe W32: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.2.29_windows_intelx86.exe W64-Vbox build: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.2.29_windows_x86_64_vbox.exe W32-Vbox build: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.2.29_windows_intelx86_vbox.exe ** Seeing no Linux/Mac builds yet, so this could be a flying in face observation... it *was* the plan, but was *is* the plan is often an offline secret. A similar 'smoothness' is anticipated as with the Windows only TThrottle, sans active temp controlled crunching. NB: On the GPU side of things, my understanding is this only works for GPU tasks that are assigned to use > 0.5 CPU threads i.e. If specifying for instance 0.1 CPU per GPU task, it wont throttle the GPU. see no spell errs at this time Added: The Rom notes on this release, also fixing the BOINC Manager hangs and crashes: I've uploaded 7.2.29 which has a change which will prevent future crashes. It also contains our first pass at sub-second CPU throttling. Meaning if you set your CPU throttle preference to 60% you should see a 60% CPU utilization of one CPU core. ----- Rom BTW, experience will tell if the throttle is alternating between cores or synchronous... suspect the latter. There's also something funky about Notices... you get them, you don't see them ;O. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 21, 2013 9:32:36 AM] |

Should we say thank you to knreed/WCG/IBM to be persevering in getting us the sub-second throttle feature? Just did the 60% setting and let it run on a duo... this is what you get if you wait a little with using the comp... Jim was fired:
