Since october the 24th, I saw my average credit drop dramatically.
I first though it was caused by new Mac OS X Maverick and its new App nap feature which force background applications to go to sleep. And in fact, it seems to be necessary to unselect the App Nap option into BOINC's information panel, to keep it running at full speed . But today, I saw in my result status, that 80 % of my FAAH work unit are in "Pending verification" Half of them are coming from the Mac I upgraded to Mac OS 10.9 Maverick 2 weeks ago , and the other half comes from an older Mac, still using Mac OS 10.8. So Maverick is not the problem, and I (almost) never had any work unit in "pending verification" before the last 2 weeks. Doeas anyone have any idea of what can cause the sudden rise of this problem? Thanks in advance |

Pending verification is done to check machine integrity, basically. It should sort itself out after a few days when all the wingmen start to return their units. If you are still getting 80% pending verification after about 2-3 days , then there might be a problem. When you check your result status do you have any errors or invalids listed ?

Hello Pousse,
----------------------------------------If you check your "Invalids" you will probably find lot of WU's there. This is the problem with VINA applications and Mac OS X - I am receiving them regularly (on all Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks) and nobody knows how to fix the problem We have two options: 1. Live with it (for each invalid we are receiving a half of points and full run time) 2. select non-VINA application (only CEP2 ATM )Cheers ![]() ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Here's [oh not again], where having sub-select for FAAH AutoDock would have been great.
For each invalid the 'wingman required' counter is reset and a serial greater than 20 validations must be recorded. Practically, on a running device with a mix of new returns it could work out as a lot more than 20 before singles [no wingman] are assigned again. In the case of branjo's Mac, where the device gets many, he probably is always running with a wingman for the AD VINA tasks. BTW, in a condition of Pending Verification, where a wingman copy is submitted -after- reporting, all new tasks are assigned with a wingman, a reason to run these Macs with very small if not zero cache, to shorten the wingman required number to get back to 'reliable' and be allowed to do it alone again. |

You're right, I don't have any errors, but I have a lot of invalids (~30% invalids, 40% pending verification , 30% valid today) It's seems to be better under Maverick, now that I set BOINC to work while computer is in use. Before that, it was going to sleep for 2 minutes 10 times an hour. This wasn't the case with Mac OS 10.8 and the same BOINC settings. I can do with it, bit this happened so suddenly, just when I upgraded one of my Macs to Maverick, that I had to find out what was wrong. I'll be aware of this during the next days. Thanks again. Pousse. |

One thing for you, pousse.
If a device does go to sleep, not sure if tasks unload at that time, or the in-situ memory state is saved for quick resume on Mac. At any case, I'd advice to set the "Leave application in memory when suspended". BOINC detects a device goes to sleep and will do so itself just before the OS goes down. If the job is saved in memory, it will record in the event log something like "... pre-empting xyz..." indicating the job is held in memory. Historically quite a few sciences don't like frequent restarting. Just one bit in the result checks has to be wrong to then get an invalid. Result Logs look fine, yet something does not get past the validator. |

Same problem with some AMD CPUs on Windows (mine is an Athlon XP 2800+, Barton core, but VINA causes trouble with other, newer AMD CPUs, too). The incompatibility with these CPUs is known since the Go fight against Malaria, Drug search for Leishmaniasis and Say No to Schistosoma projects, since VINA was introduced so. I get nearly 100% "pending verification" and then invalids on VINA units (any other ones are processed successfully with nearly 100% reliability).
So I merely selected faah at my projects list and was happy to do these work units instead, until faah switched to VINA, too :-( (I can't do cep2 units, because my PC would need to run up to 10 hours without saving a checkpoint and I turn it off when I'm not using it.) I'd really appreciate a selection between faah Autodock and VINA and meanwhile am looking forward to the new project, which is in beta test at the moment. But most I would like these VINA issues to be fixed eventually. |

We are looking into the invalid issue for FAHV on Mac OS. We are in the initial investigation and will let you know what we find.
Thanks, -Uplinger |

We have implemented a temporary patch to the server to help decrease the number of Invalids for FAHV. We are splitting out the groups of results to each of the release versions of Mac OS. We noticed that Maverick compared to Maverick but Maverick did not compare to Mountain Lion. This is not an issue only with Maverick being released but with Mountain Lion to Lion as well. We are working on a permanent fix to the science application but that will take more time as Alpha and Beta tests will be required. Users may see invalids for the next week still as the existing work units are being processed.
Thanks, -Uplinger |
