Re: Is this a viable option ( second hand 2 x xeon server)

I'm back, a couple of days in and it looks like it's giving around 70 (ish) K WCG ppd, or around 10K (ish) Boinc. It seems the initial CEP units points were just weird. Probably just down to calibrating how much to pay this machine..

What's the noise like for the unit if you are in the same room with it?

Re: Is this a viable option ( second hand 2 x xeon server)

I'm not in the same room as it, and not going to be. As I said in an earlier post, the fan noise is noticeable, not as loud as some high end gaming machines with powerful graphics cards I've heard at full throttle, but it is loud enough that it won't be sharing a room with me.

It's probably a little quieter than a standard 2KW fan heater when running, but the annoying thing isn't the noise itself, but the frequency of the noise, small fans, so high pitched noise.

If considering getting one and the noise is important to you I'd either avoid it or modify it to use 120mm fans. Modding it would mean it'd no longer be rackable, but if only buying one that wouldn't be an issue.

FWIW here's the latest total figures for the machine. They're not ideal as they'll be skewed by some massively overpaid CEP units and a few underpaid Betas, but overall the units have been running at 96-98% efficiency so simple division of time by points and units should give a reasonably close set of figures.

Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) Points Generated Results Returned

0:083:14:17:49 258,252 621

So about 128 points per thread per clock hour. For various reasons the machine has run dry a couple of times whilst I've been playing with it, so I don't have a full 24hrs results in any day. But it's looking like its doing at least 70k WCG points per day.

Re: Is this a viable option ( second hand 2 x xeon server)

Back again with a little update, it's averaged overall around 60K WCG PPD running a mix of CEP, FAAH, and MCM, and Betas. It's got 48Gb of ram and no HDD and the OS (Linux Mint - Mate edition running off a live distro on usb stick). It's able to handle 24 CEP units at the same time, but it's a bit of a squeeze (no WU errors at all though smile ). So running a mix of sciences to balance the load.

Power usage is reasonable, bearing in mind we're talking 12 HT cores running maxed out on crunching WU's. I plugged the power meter in and it's chugging along using an average of 205 watts (but bear in mind that's with no fancy graphics cards, HDD etc, and in a cool room so the fans aren't running flat out.).

Current total stats are

1:179:09:31:39 1,379,481 2,583

So if my sums are right that works out as around 12 WCG points per watt. (1,379,481 points/544.5 days) multiplied by 24 threads running at the same time =60,803 PPD/(205w/hr*24hrs) =12PPw

I've rounded that down to 12 as I figure the total runtime will be CPU time not elapsed, but as it crunches with very good efficiency elapsed time won't be that much more.
