No CEP2 work on one computer.

I have 4 crunchers running at the moment and one of those never got any CEP2 wu's.

The one that isn't getting any CEP2 work is on the same profile as one of the others and that one has gotten work regularly.
Both run Linux 64 bit and as far as I can tell boinc has been setup the same.
The cruncher is up now for almost 2 weeks. It gets plenty of FAAH work, but no CEP2 at all.
I tried detaching and re attaching, that didn't help.

Does any one have any idea what could cause this.

Thanks.

Re: No CEP2 work on one computer.

Also check whichever Device Profile you are using on the problem computer to ensure that CEP2 is selected as a project and review the system requirements for CEP2 i.e. Memory Available 1,024 MB Disk Space 2,048 MB. You might also check Project Specific Settings The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 is limited on how many workunits a computer can have downloaded at a time and what minimum bandwidth the computer must have in order to receive any workunits. Changing this value from the default of 1 will override both of these restrictions.

Re: No CEP2 work on one computer.

The profile I use is also used on an other cruncher and that one works fine. That one downloaded 4 wu's a few minutes ago. And the problem cruncher give the message "No tasks are available for The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2"

There is 4 gigs of ram installed and boinc can use 22 gig of hd space.

Number of workunits per host for The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 is set to 8

This might be the problem but I'm no expert when it comes to app_config so hopefully one of the forum gurus will post some advice.

Re: No CEP2 work on one computer.

Hello Rob_B,
shock
Look at that memory. 256 MB virtual memory! And 1.9 GB memory allowed if active. This means a max of 2 CEP2 (at 1 GB per CEP2 unit) since FAAH might ask for 250 MB per FAAH unit. And what are you doing using app_config.xml when you obviously need to leave BOINC free to cram 8 work units into 3.84 GB.

Change your memory settings. First, your Ubuntu OS should have about 6 GB virtual memory to play it safe, though 4 GB would probably work. You have the disk for both. NEVER stint on VM. Hard disks are cheap. I assume that this is not your game computer, so allow it to use 3.5 GB whether active or not. See how efficient CEP2 is with 1 thread, then see how the efficiency drops with 2 threads. Never go past 4 threads of CEP2 if you only have 4 physical cores. It is much more efficient to stuff 4 big and 4 small programs onto 4 hyperthreading cores and you lack the memory to be sure that you can always run 4 CEP2 units simultaneously. Sizes vary and people always complain when we run a batch that bumps up against the 1 GB limit. Remember, Harvard is running the large 8 GB units on their Linux cluster while we run the more numerous < 1 GB units on our machines. 1 GB units are not mythical.

blushing I did let myself become overheated, didn't I? Anyway, expand those memory limits and cut back to 1 CEP2 unit to start with.

Lawrence

Re: No CEP2 work on one computer.

I have now changed the memory settings and increased the virtual memory.
Also removed the app_config file. I used that to limit the number of wu's being crunched to 2 at a time but still being able to have 8 wu's cached.

But still no CEP2 wu's. Set the profile to CEP2 only now and dumped a large amount of FAVH wu's to see if I could get some CEP2 wu's. But now I get the message: This computer has finished a daily quota of 9 tasks
I will have to wait till tomorrow to see if I get some wu's again.

This is what the info looks like now:

Re: No CEP2 work on one computer.

Have had the identical issue few weeks ago, identical messages, when installing a clean Ubu 13.10 with the repo provided 7.2.7 on a quad, no HT. Explicitly the GPU functionality of BOINC disabled. Set an app_config to limit CEP2 to 1 crunching, rest free for all WCG. Activating varying debug options in cc_config.xml, nothing of use was logged. Eventually selected only CEP2 and the "If there is no work...", which in effect meant it would keep getting alternate work, speak FA@H, then let it be. 2 Days later when looking in found CEP2 was crunching. Go figure.

The app_config warning for CEP2 is innocuous. It's just telling it has not got the application yet, which wont come until the first CEP2 task is assigned... why download 200MB+ if the host is not deemed having the sufficient resource ;).

Whilst, given the odd low RAM for an 8 core device... 1GB per core is my rule of thumb, propose you set the use of processors to 50% = 4 thread and let it rip... it does rip through FAHV without HT used on Linux 64.

My thinking is, something is not jiving between the client and the server, not feeding back the right ''user comprehendable'' message. It just tells you there's no work available, when there is. Vaguely remember kneoreed asking to snapshot the scheduler connect files right after a failed fetch, which could detail more of the server interaction. There are 2:

sched_request_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml
sched_reply_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml

The first contains all the 'momentary' configuration information, which allows the server to determine if the device meets the minimum conditions.

The second file tells as what the name infers... It does a housekeeping check to see what the host has, and checks if anything additional needs to be send... missing or additional. If you wish, mail those files to 'contact us' together with the stdoutdae.txt and stderrdae.txt files and explain the issue. For sure, clients set to only do CEP2 without the "if there is no work for..." else use external backup projects, like I did in testing, went to crunch elsewhere... a loss of computing time to WCG and an issue festering since way too long. In my said test, it essential spent 6 CPU days at SIMAP before something wised up. Looking at the past 10 global day statistics, both mid and full day, something is on which absolutely makes no sense at all to the outside viewer [moi]. Is there anybody out there?... (who understands)?
