I have installed BOINC on my hero only to find that thee doesn't seem to be anything with a low enough memory requirement to run on it. I would be interested in knowing if anyone has managed to do some crunching with a Hero?

Hello catchercradle,
Looking at the review at http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/htc-hero-sprint/4507-6452_7-33770450.html, I see that this 2009 design does not have any internal flash memory to use as a hard disk substitute so - no, BOINC projects can not run on it. External flash uses different code which we have not programmed yet. Possibly we never will since only the lowest-end devices do not have internal flash memory. Lawrence |

It also comes with Android 2.1 which is not new enough for Berkeley's version of BOINC. If yours still has 2.1 on it, you would only have nativeBOINC as an option. As lawrencehardin explained, you would also need internal memory to install to, because they haven't been able to get external memory to work while meeting the requirements necessary for getting the app into the Google Play Store.

Certainly would vote ++ on the techs making a sticky post at top of the Android forum that goes top the Help article spelling out the Android and ARM minimum requirements. Maybe that Help article could also x-link to the System requirements page and make it explicit it has to be internal RAM [footnote 3].
----------------------------------------All Help articles that mention Android, click https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewSearch.do?searchString=android Noting that I've seen a slightly higher version being used as test base at Berkeley, 2.3.6 IIRC edit: The "Which World Community Grid projects can be run on Android devices?" and the "What are the recommended minimum system specifications?" are in conflict... SN2S is not available on Android, never has been FAIK [In Production]. edit2: Add ending note... System Req. never has specified Beta specs. I'm guessing you aren't counting BETA in this statement. https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ead_thread,35345_offset,0 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks, I was beginning to suspect that it wouldn't work. Just for completeness I have upgraded to Android 2.3. I couldn't get boinc to even install with 2.1
