Re: Seeing more frequent "Maximum disk usage exceeded" on current series

Try increasing the Maximum Disk Usage setting in your profile. I updated mine from 10Gb to 20Gb and the errors seem to have gone away.

Re: Seeing more frequent "Maximum disk usage exceeded" on current series

Feel free to set BOINC to 1TB, if you have that... it makes zero zilch difference. As noted this is a job specified limit, each science having a different one. E.g. FAHV is limited to

<rsc_disk_bound>104857600.000000</rsc_disk_bound>

or about 100MB. You can see this in the client_state.xml for each active job. Description:
*rsc_disk_bound* A bound on the maximum disk space used by the job,
including all input, temporary, and output files. The job will only be sent
to hosts with at least this much available disk space. If this bound is
exceeded, the job will be aborted.

When only some of the wingmen are getting it the issue might be they have their client settings too low and that's causing the error instead of the project limit.

Yes. This is a specific example of a general problem. There are many variable settings that can cause a project to bomb, but BOINC does not allow the user a way to paste these settings into the forum for us to critique. It is frustrating.

Re: Seeing more frequent "Maximum disk usage exceeded" on current series

?

Key elements, memory [RAM and VM] and allowed / used disk space is printed at start of event/message log and anytime the prefs are updated, these get reprinted. Else the global_prefs and global_prefs_override [if using local prefs], contain all settings in text form... easy to copy/paste, but find rare need for these... the log suffices.

Whilst, in the example, if 4 CEP2 are running and using e.g. 4GB out of 10GB set, and a new CEP2 task is requested, the server client interaction checks if 2GB [BOINC allowed] disk space is free as well sufficient memory, i.e. real time check that 6GB can be used by BOINC atm the time of receipt. Can only repeat, the topiced issue is logged when the -individual- model has grown over it's limit [2GB]. I just looked on another client and this shows for all 4 running CEP2

<rsc_disk_bound>2147483648.000000</rsc_disk_bound>

The said 2GB free that's checked prior to assigning a task, which is when the model wishes to go above, it craps out, and -that- is more often, but still relative rarely used [obese molecules maybe]. Not incurred on 35 jobs since the start of this thread... < 3% [and my disk setting has been 22GB for a very long time... all space of the exclusive BOINC G: partition, and yet I got these errors]

edit: Maybe in a future, far far away, the web device profile settings could be made to easily copy paste... those are the ones that have a preferred use [and to which techs have access]. Right now, copy/paste and you get this... no values that are shown on screen:
Disk Usage
Use no more than: Gigabytes of disk space
Leave at least: Gigabytes of disk space free
Use no more than: % of total disk space
Write to disk at most every: seconds

Sunday Oct.27 and it's wintertime again, a good discussion in Europe ongoing to make DST permanent [except for the Spanish... they want permanent wintertime... better suiting their lifestyle] Permanent DST -does- save lives too [commuters killed in evening traffic... when we're tired of the hard days night]. Have a good day, all.

Re: Seeing more frequent "Maximum disk usage exceeded" on current series

We are investigating the space requirements for the current workunits to verify what adjustments might be needed.

Thanks,

Re: Seeing more frequent "Maximum disk usage exceeded" on current series

Thanks armstrdj smile

Still getting errors with 20Gb Max Disk Usage in my profile. Reverted back to 10Gb.
Problem seems to only be happening on my Linux boxes. Not getting any disk space errors on my Windows boxes.
Most wingmen are getting the same error. But some wingmen are able to complete the failing units.

Re: Seeing more frequent "Maximum disk usage exceeded" on current series

I am still getting 'Maximum disk usage exceeded' errors on two Ubuntu boxes. Is there a config file I can update to increase the disk usage threshold? I'm running 6.10.17 and 7.0.27 on two Athlon quad-core machines. My units usually error out in Job #12. I've seen slower wingmen normally complete before encountering the disk usage error and get credit. This doesn't seem fair. My understanding was the first half of jobs was important and the last half of jobs are icing on the cake.

sad

Re: Seeing more frequent "Maximum disk usage exceeded" on current series

We have increased the limit of temporary disk space that CEP2 can use from 2GB to 2.5GB. If you continue to have issues please let us know.
Thanks,
armstrdj

I'm focusing most of my cores on the new Cancer project now. If I see more CEP2 errors I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks armstrdj!
