Would like to know if it's possible to open up s390x architecture on projects again. I've got some big iron that's begging for crunching.
Thanks! :) |

Hello TUSEBC,
Your post really took me by surprise. As far as I know, there has never been any work by the distributed computing community to port to the s390x family. It is just not found in the ordinary home. Here is a site with news from all the distributed computing community: http://www.distributedcomputing.info/index.html Lawrence |

WCG doesnt even support PPC arch, which has a couple of hundred machines registered here. Good look convincing the tech's to port the apps for you!
---------------------------------------- If you run linux on the S390 you could run SETI@HOME with the linux binary for boinc client found on this page. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Unlikely to be worth it running cost wise.
----------------------------------------s390 has more complex instructions but runs fewer of them and bad at Floating Point. The z10 we use in-house consumes several kw but rates about 600 MIPS if set for full power. (We usually run at minimum model of about 40 MIPS to reduce license cost). This is enough MIPS for a client to support tens of users and another supports about 1,000 users with 200 MIPS. Better off re-tasking it's HMC and SE laptops but they are likely older model PCs with poor power (cost) per BOINC point. Paul.
Paul.

I have a z196 (along with the rest of the hardware I operate) purposed for show/demonstration. I've decided to start putting these CPUs to use.
I've successfully installed Debian on an LPAR with 16 CPU's allocated. I've installed the s390x boinc binaries, they function well, just waiting for work to be assigned. So in the meantime I've installed KVM/QEMU on the mainframe and created some x86_64 guests, then installed the x86_64 boinc binaries within the guests. Obviously through the emulation layers performance isn't all that great as expected: Debian s390x bogomips 14,367 per CPU Debian x86_64 emulated using s390x hardware is only 8,190 per CPU Since those really don't mean anything I ran a quick 1 thread sysbench: s390x 2.64ms per-request x86_64 emulation 52.86ms per-request However, all of this is definitely interesting. |

If you can port Autodock to the s390x, then porting MCM and FAH should be easy.

Came across this post from a few years back.....
We currently have a Linux only IBM Rockhopper (zBC12) for development and demo purposes available which I want to use. I created a VM with Ubuntu 16.04 and installed the Boinc software straight out of the Ubuntu repo. I got everything up and running but than the World Community Grid gave me the following: 20-Nov-2016 23:02:23 [World Community Grid] Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. 20-Nov-2016 23:02:23 [World Community Grid] Requesting new tasks for CPU 20-Nov-2016 23:02:24 [World Community Grid] Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks 20-Nov-2016 23:02:24 [World Community Grid] This project doesn't support computers of type s390x-ibm-linux-gnu Any ideas on how to get this working? |

Thanks! :) why not use virtualization & put some Linux on it? http://www.vm.ibm.com/devpages../DFITZGER/report.pdf It might think it's a PC & use it that way... ![]() |

@KLiK You're replying to a 3 year old post. Johan just above you has recently tried running WCG s390x Linux virtualised on their "mainframe", but apparently the s390x is blocked in the software?
