I have often noticed that some so called priority wu’s are pushed ahead of the running wu. I would understand moving them up in the Q line but why stop an almost finish wu with only minutes to completion to replace it by a 6 hours run time for a priority wu.
----------------------------------------I worked 30 years for IBM and I have seen such stupid management on the production floors. So much that at the end of the day no production is completed on four lots that are placed on shelves all waiting for a break in the schedule. I would suggest that a priority wu is simply moved up in the Q line. But the currently running wu's is given a chance to finish. Rej ![]() THE ).( IS NAKED! Do you know what your PC is doing ??? |

hmmm, well, start reading the forums or contact the developers at their forums or mailing list, for 'such stupid management' has a purpose [though it is often a result of a volunteer having changed the preferences in a way that will cause this to happen]. Typically, anyone who's client Q line is presently greater than ~1.5 days, yes, 1.5 days, will 'experience' this. Set the Q line lower/shorter, and you'll see this less or not at all. Of course, refraining from looking at all, BOINC loves you for that... it's AI conscious, lets work complete anyhow, and all well in time, for that is the sole purpose... to deliver batches of work units, once completed, to the scientists.
----------------------------------------(Don't care about IBM level of post production warehousing, but I'd want it smallest... stock is dead capital, and parts you want JIT to build product, particularly if the product has already been contracted for client delivery ;). I worked 30 years for IBM and I have seen such stupid management on the production floors........... Rej Why bring IBM into this complaint about scheduling when BOINC has nothing to do with them. Why not complain to the BOINC developers and keep our forums clear of complaints? ![]() |

My point was not that there should not by priority wu’s, but rather the handling of such priorities. I do not understand why an almost completed wu should by side tracked to make way for another wu. That’s all.

Hello xroule,
If it kills you to answer, then just don’t. I started watching the (?foolish?) behavior of the BOINC priority algorithm in 2005. There was quite a large group of posts to read explaining the history and a lot of volunteers busy changing the algorithm. By the end of 2005, I stopped following the (frequent) changes. In an awkward sort of way, it worked and the developers who specialized in this particular bit of code seemed to be enjoying themselves. After all, in volunteer software development, the goal is to have fun. With the newest BOINC client (7.0.64 / 7.0.65) I have not experienced such problems.
