A few months ago my Yahoo account got hacked, and out of an abundance of caution I reformatted my computer and reinstalled the operating system (Mac OS 10.4.11 "Tiger.") Just about a week ago I resumed crunching WCG, but much to my surprise, all of my results came back either with computation errors (FAAH) or invalid (SN2S).
Here's a copy of the result from my last SN2S job: Result Name: SN2S_ 3FPU_ 0000275_ 0705_ 0-- <core_client_version>6.10.58</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <stderr_txt> INFO: No state to restore. Hello jonathandl,
Computation errors point to a problem with the project code (requiring complete download of projects) or a memory problem. I would start by reducing the number of threads running to see if small memory usage made a difference, then I would uninstall and re-install BOINC from https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php/ to see if that made a difference. I normally have BOINC set to allow usage of up to 75% of RAM if the computer is in use, or up to 80% of RAM if the computer is idle. I see no setting for the number of threads (where is it?) but I decided to clear the preferences (which should reset my computer's preferences to whatever the Web-based settings are), and then reset the project (clicked "Reset project" in the BOINC client – I used to do this all the time
, but just realized that the current situation is one that actually merits this!)FAAH still fails: <core_client_version>6.10.58</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> process got signal 5 </message> <stderr_txt> dyld: unknown required load command 0x80000022 </stderr_txt> ]]> As for schisto., I think that one job turned up valid after I Reset Project, and the other one went into Pending Verification and got issued to another user, then disappeared from the Results Status before I could see whether it validated. |

Your error signal 5 is rare, both on Google [from 2004] and here. A past [lone] thread suggests the combination of OS version, BOINC version and application causes the error to appear from "Unrecoverable error": http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ad,31005_offset,10#317139
'absent...' may hint at a permissions problem. Have no Mac, but understand that users need to be added to the BOINC group. Don't know if that rings a bell. The number of threads/concurrent jobs is controlled by way of a percent of processors. E.g. 25% on a quad is 1 core, but on an octo is 2. |

I only have one processor. In any case I just got another faah task fail:

WCG just expanded the support for the new MCM science to 10.5.x, but that's where the limit has been set so it seems [Intel only]. You are running probably the only remaining science that supports 10.4.
Not giving up too quickly, did a search with the problem code of your last report and found this: http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/runn...yld-unknown-required-load http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/runn...yld-unknown-required-load Reads like the only way to fix this would be to recompile the science app. You say the problem started after reinstalling the OS which would imply some library is missing that faah needs [32 bit?]... really tapping in the dark on this. Jonathan, it may sound harsh, but 1 core using how many watts? My new one takes 13.5 watts/hour compared to the old [just retired], that took 40 watts/core for a total 160 W/h. At the power prices here, the new machine is paid for in about 5 years with a life expectancy which I would not rate less than the old, 8 years, at 24/7. |

How do I determine the wattage? Anyway, when I reinstalled the OS (because right after I installed 10.6.8, my Yahoo account got hacked), I also downgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.4.11. (Safari in Mac OS 10.6.8 is really slow on my single-core machine.)
----------------------------------------I only had 10.6.8 installed for a few days, so this shouldn't have made much difference. In summary, then, 10.4.11 worked just fine before. [Edit 4 times, last edit by jonathandl at Dec 16, 2013 8:06:05 PM] |

How do I determine the wattage? You need a meter like the Kill-O-Watt. Just plug the meter into the wall and plug you computer into the meter. Or if you own an amp meter, you can calculate the wattage from the amperage being used. Cheers

The poster has not been seen in months. On the groups, the latest clients do not require this manual addition stuff unless boinc is installed as service. BOINC groups will only be created when running the agent as service.
On the os version, my guess is a reference is made to the faah application being very old and thus having legacy support. |
