Re: Do you think the US government hasn't monitored you?

If they're NOT spying on me, I'm going to be very, very disappointed.

Personally I don't think that I'm that interesting. In any case, they have way, way, way overstepped their boundaries with no regard for the Constitution, democracy, or personal liberty.

And since we're resorting to quotes to justify arguments there is no better one than Benjamin Franklin: "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." February, 1775

Re: Do you think the US government hasn't monitored you?

I do not care if the government wants to monitor any or all of my online stuff because:
A: I do not have a facebook account
B: As far as I know, I have virtually nothing to hide
C: I am not paranoid
D: I am not a conspiracy theorist
E: I have very little worth stealing except for stuff that is old and almost worn out
F: I live a pretty boring existence

I too have nothing to hide, but......

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

I agree with the sentiments expressed that I need to speak up for just and fair treatment for others. However, there are those for whom justice and fairness have no meaning. They are those who have the belief that if you do not think like me I will kill you. For example, look what was done to Malala Yousafzai merely because she wanted to go to school and be educated. If looking at my email, phone, etc. helps to prevent this kind of thing from happening, I am all for it.

KWSN - A Shrubbery,
Ahi! touché! I got off the rails when I introduced the sequence issue. I apologize. In fact, I did not even remember the correct person (I was thinking it belonged to Reinhold Niebuhr), but I did see that an important text was being presented without attribution, so I stand by that objection.

Agreed. Any reference to datum deserves a proper attribution. Sadly this is sorely lacking in the vast majority of internet posts.

Re: Do you think the US government hasn't monitored you?

Government spying is nothing new and has been going on for a very long time. It's only recently been coming to light because of whistle blowers, social media and more people being made aware of what's really going on. We've been lied to about almost everything.

NSA lied to Congress

Lies about Benghazi

Our liar-in-chief and his progressive/socialist minions have taken it to a whole new level

They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security. Ben Franklin

Right. Also if we do not protest such invasions of liberty and privacy at home how can we protest the misuse abroad. I don't feel I should have much to worry about from the spying in this country, at this time, but yesterday or tomorrow are different.

It was a good thing Joseph McCarthy, J. Edgar Hoover, and Richard Nixon didn't have such powers, with so little restriction on their use. Tomorrow it may be someone wanting to know who I know, to know who shares my political, religious, or moral views, or lack of them. Today I would not like to live in a number of countries and use a computer on the internet or use a smart phone the way I freely do in this country.

I don't have anything to hide in the bedroom but I wouldn't want the government looking at us with infrared tech and justifying it by saying I shouldn't have any expectation of privacy if I don't use IR blocking materials on my walls and roof.

I don't have anything to hide in the men's room but I wouldn't want to be spied on there and have it justified because some terrorist may be using mem's rooms to pass information.

I don't have views I feel I need to hide but even so I don't want the government spying on my political, religious, and moral views when I share them on a phone or computer. I don't even want them spying on my contacts I share those view with even if they don't look at the content.

No, today, I don't want even the Bushs and Obamas and their likes to have such power, to use on major portions of the population as a giant net. There should be more restrictive protection on how such powers can be used.

I agree we have been lied to in the past and probably will be in the future. I don't like being lied to by others or the government. We can not have total freedom nor have total privacy. We need to have the appropriate checks and balances built into the system to protect both.
Cheers

We do. It's called the Constitution and this administration has been trampling on it since day 1.

We are 5 days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America

Said by Barry O 5 days before the 2008 election. The key word is "fundamentally."

Re: Do you think the US government hasn't monitored you?

If the NSA follows me we will see if a computer program can actually die of boredom.

There are a lot of well meaning people working in the government. On the other hand, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. I am concerned the temptation to "investigate" political opponents will be too great for some administration and thing will go down the drain quickly.
