Re: Can anybody repurpose bitcoin miners for WCGrid research?

Hello,

I think that this would be a really long run project with uncertain result. The machines are incredibly powerful, but they cost a lot and are used for just one specific reason so not many WCG members would bought them. And if they would they would use them to mine BTC.

I would suggest you to run them somewhere outside USA and use them for what they have been designed - mining Bitcoins.

You can than use mined money to support WCG or any other project worth.

You may even want to talk to Bicoin Utopia http://www.bitcoinutopia.com/about/ or perhaps the staff at Donate http://donateathome.org/ AKA GPUGrid's sister site (They shut their doors due to efficiency vs. GPU issues but if you could present a good enough case, they might look into it.) since both projects generate(d) Bitcoins for funding.

I see some of these miners are OpenCL. Does that mean Altera can customize a driver?

In theory, yes:) The SDK, IIRC, claims to compile the kernel and create the software that will be downloaded to the device. A couple of hours with the SDK should get you a basic proof of concept if you want to put in the time. But, like others have said, it's probably not going to be at the top of the BOINC crew's priority list.

It might also be worth talking to the folks at OpenMM and Folding at Home. BOINC is just a middleman, but they "eat their own dog food" over at F@H:)
