Hey all,
----------------------------------------So I recently upped my ram to 12GB to run 4 concurrent CEP2 WUs, and had a question about possible conflicts in how I've allocated my ram between conventional ram and a RAMdisk. Below is a link to my setup; of 12GB I've said 7GB should go to the /BOINC/slots directory, just to be on the safe side, but I noticed that while crunching it appears that another 7GB of the RAM is either actively in use or cached. Memory Usage Stats (Note that there's no apparent conflict yet, since 4.2GB + 7GB < 12GB, and although it's entirely possible that there's an addressing conflict, I haven't noticed any symptoms that would lead me to believe that's the case yet) My question is does Linux (Ubuntu 12.04) know not to create conflicts between the RAMdisk and the leftover RAM being used conventionally, or by allocating 7GB of 12GB am I setting myself up for a situation in which all my base will belong to a memory allocation error when the planets align? --mg ![]() |

? 4.2G used of the allocated 7G ramdisk.. a filesystem stat. The roughly 7G being used would include the 4.2G, so the 4.2 + 7 logic might be off. 7 in use, 5 free.. I'm not seeing the potential for conflict, or am completely missing the question:)

I suppose my question is whether the amount listed as in use on the file system is included in the amount listed as being "used" under the second section in the photo (which I believe is the "free -m" command), or whether under Linux both the Ramdisk and the conventional RAM usage could claim the same memory, in my particular case say if the portion used by the filesystem rose to 5GB and the RAM (in use + cached) went above 7GB so that the 12GB I have were exceeded.

I think it's fair to assume that usage is usage. I'd be more concerned about exceeding the filesystem allocation. Honestly, not I'm really seeing the benefit to a RAMdisk. The effort and maintenance don't justify the small gain in performance IMHO.
