I have heard the same as you . . . BUT I have read the 5th book in George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series and then gone back and started reading books 1-4 on my computer with an icon to a zoomable JPEG map downloaded from http://www.sermountaingoat.co.uk to let me follow the sudden jumps in the story and another icon leading to a wiki about "A Song of Ice and Fire" which lets me look up characters and even story synopses if I enter the name of a book. It is amazing how much I am picking up that I missed on my first reading. I am on book 4 now.

Things like this keep me smiling and patient.
