Re: geo location leader boards

This idea came to my mind while I was playing little android game called Global Outbreak. And the thing you mentioned about several locations is actually even better. As I was playing on my phone while travelling I was able to see how do I rank up in several cities from which I "checked in". I can imagine that number of location could be limited due to extreme travellers let's say up to 10 places. Or it would be good not to use GPS or IP location but simple let user to select locations where he want's to be seeing leaderboards and his rank in there.

Re: geo location leader boards

This part of jonnieb-uk post is the key why such statistic will probably never come true raised eyebrow

Anything that motivates people to crunch, or crunch more, merits consideration.

Ranking, by Country, in RunTime, Points and Results is already available Statistics>>By Geography for both AllTime and Daily.

It is a longstanding policy that members have to opt-in, by selecting their country in My Grid>>My Profile

I suspect that anything involving use of IP location data would contravene the IBM guidelines under which WCG operates.

WCG tech time for development of "wish list" suggestions is severely limited and comes after bringing new projects online, expansion to include Android devices etc etc.

The extension of Badges to reflect increased computing power is just one example of a worthy suggestion that has been bubbling around for some years without attracting any priority.

Cheers peace

Except when you have more then one device checking in. Then it would say you are in two places at once. I have over a dozen systems running in my home. 7 are netbooks and laptops. I have 4 mobile phones but only one of which leaves the house. I have borged machines else where. How does your idea reflect me competing as you describe? Using IP addresses would only complicate things because of this. When you talk about only one device, that would possibly work. Too bad those times have come and gone for most people. And I personally don't want to know how I rank in up to 10 different places. Stats sites already tell you where you stand in your country. The problem is that not everyone identifies themselves as a single location and thus your ranking is only an illusion.

I also agree with branjo. Not only WCG guidelines conflicting, but there are quite a few people who don't want tracked any more then necessary.

Re: geo location leader boards

WCG members have the option of declaring a nationality. So many refused to right from the start that it quickly became obvious that many of our members have an ideological aversion to declaring any address other than the world as a whole.

Lawrence

Using the figures from BOINC stats suggests ~15% of users do not declare "country". IMHO this is due more to lethargy when asked to opt-in than any "ideological aversion". wink

I agree with this. Imagine a slight modification of WCG. Just add region of country and city. In one single email users can be informed and who is interested can modify the profile. Done.
This way we would satisfy people who might like the geo location leaderboards and also people who disagree with the idea could simply ignore it.
