Cooling question

I'm trying to improve the cooling on/in a couple of my systems, they both run the following hardware:

AMD FX-8350 x8
Corsair H100 CPU cooler (240mm rad with 2x 120mm fans, airflow = inward)
2 x 120mm front mounted case fans (airflow = inward)
1 x 120mm side mounted case fan (airflow = inward)
1 x 120mm rear mounted case fan (airflow = outward)
these all create positive pressure, keeping the CPU to around 50C when under full load crunching.

The only difference are:
System 1
    2 x HD7970 (3 fans on each)
    Corsair Obsidian 650D case
    32Gb RAM
System 2
    3 x HD7770 (1 fans on each)
    Corsair Vengeance C90 case
    16Gb RAM

I've tried the H100 fans with outward airflow, which results in an overall higher temp within the CPU

The side mounted location has space for another 120mm fan.

My questions are these:

How can I improve the cooling?
Which is better and why?
    Positive pressure within the case?
    Negative pressure within the case?
Which of the above provide best airflow?

Many thanks in advance...

Edit - Added case details

Re: Cooling question

50c is not excessive at all for full load CPU.

If you still want to reduce it more put fans on both sides of the h100 in push/pull configuration.

Re: Cooling question

What are you crunching with those 7970s?

Re: Cooling question

@ryan - Yep, thought of that, would it really help though?

@BladeD - Poem & Milkyway ATM until something else comes along from WCG maybe!

Anyone got any comments on the pressure questions?

Re: Cooling question

Positive pressure is wonderful for controlling dust, if you have filters in place, but greater air flow through the case is going to provide better cooling I think.

If you still have any plates covering the pci slots at rear removing them will destroy any positive pressure and allow more flow as would adding a fan on the side panel to extract heat from around the cards.

I guess this may improve your cpu temps but I am less sure it will benefit your cards.

Last choice is bigger faster nastier fans to remove the air from the case... in fact more flow all round is an option provided you can handle the noise

EDIT: perhaps a fan to remove GPU heat might help too. The old coolermaster 840 atcs had a box which fitted over the slots at the rear of the case. the box was fitted with a fan to help pull the hot air from the graphics cards. I am sure a search will help you find a pic of what I am talking about

Re: Cooling question

Thanks OldChap!

I have a fan on the side blowing air into the area of the GPU's, I've been thinking of using it in reverse to remove air from around the GPU's as you say, I'll give it a try...

I have the Corsair Link Commander connecting the fans & H100 etc and yes, increasing the noise will increase the cooling, but the noise gets a bit intrusive after a while!

I think reversing the side mounted fan and adding another one will be the next test!

Many thanks again, I'll report back on the results (it won't be tonight as I have a film to watch) biggrin

Any other tips/comments would be much appreciated...

Re: Cooling question

@OldChap, et al...
I've reversed the side fan and added another one, this has clearly increased the airflow as the temperatures have all come down about 5C. This includes the CPU, GPU and case temp.

The end result is a good reduction in temperatures with little or no increase in noise! I tested it with the following running all at the same time:
    3 x FAHV
    3 x FAAH
    4 x Milkyway (GPU)
      GPU = 0.5
      CPU = 0.5
No noticable issues with the PC, as I was monitoring and using it while this was going on (no restriction on 'pc in use')

The tests were completed on the Corsair Vengeance C90 case, but I think the Obsidian will return similar results.

Many thanks for all the input and advice.

Re: Cooling question

I've done some of the same experiments you are doing and decided to stop GPU crunching for the hot summer months. Kudos to you for persevering! I have even resorted to using AC plug-in fans to supplement the case fans. Take of the back panel of the case and touch the underside of the CPU socket (after grounding you hand to the case of course). If you find that it is hot to touch, a small fan blowing on it will usually bring down the CPU time a few degrees temp. I once even to off the front side panel and put a cheap 21" box blowing directly into the case. cooled every thing down a few degrees but the looks and sound was too much for the wife to tolerate, even for science :).
