I would guess that we won't come close to the points we achieved last year. I may be able to help if I can replace an older lenovo with either a new laptop or a desktop that has an i7 (or better) processor.

If we were to get another GPU project we could still make a run at it but from silence I hear, I assume you are correct. |

I would guess that we won't come close to the points we achieved last year. I may be able to help if I can replace an older lenovo with either a new laptop or a desktop that has an i7 (or better) processor. If we were to get another GPU project we could still make a run at it but from silence I hear, I assume you are correct. To be quite honest, I hadn't looked at our numbers and end of year outlook. I didn't think there was much to be optimistic about. Well, I've just looked at them and, while not everything will be on the same scale at in past years, things actually look rather impressive, especially under the circumstances. Here's what I found: We have 440,881,606 points as of today (29 Sep). We have 93 days left in the year. Our daily numbers normally are falling in the 800K to 1 million point range and often towards the middle of it. 93 days at 900K points per day will mean an additional 83,700,000 points by year end. That would leave us just shy of 525 million points. Last year, we did 507,680,415 points. To match that, we need just 66,798,809 points or 718,267 per day. I think it is safe to say that we can reasonably expect to beat our numbers for 2012, albeit not on the typical scale as in past years. Under the circumstances, I think this is a great peformance. We have no GPU WUs, basically just two projects active, a fair amount of burnout within the WCG community (a lot of folks have only known the 6-10 active projects time here at WCG), and, I suspect somewhat significantly, no active cancer project. If the new cancer project does actually get started ( I do expect that it will), I think that will only serve to increase our numbers as well as those for all of WCG. A lot of us have particular reasons for an attraction to cancer projects. I've found it hard myself to run much more of FAAH simply because I wanted to keep HCC in my top spot for numbers. What's the logic in that? For anyone in a position to get a new machine, if you can afford the impact on your electric bill, can tolerate the added heat output and maintain tranquility at home add the new machine. Let the old one keep crunching until it dies or becomes a problem (money-wise, temp-wise, peace-wise for example). Every bit helps. Every bit adds up. I knew a year would come eventually where our growth would not have the same magnitude as in the past. It's pretty hard to keep growing by 50-80 percent every year. 525 million points is by no means a disappointment. It's still plenty to be proud of. |

Thanks for clearing things up a bit. If we can keep all of the processors we have active for some time, it may help to increase our numbers for next year. We have been concentrating on whatever project is available (faah for now) and recently we have 25+ cpu days for every calendar day. I don't see that decreasing. That is one reason I try to find out more about the environment RT has to work with (it must be multiple machines using i7 processors).
