Had to take the my Server offline after a few days as it was upsetting the cats due to the noise. Due to being poorly over the last couple of weeks only did the fan mod Tuesday gone. ![]() Rack servers are usually designed for a high airflow front to back. Noise is rarely a consideration (which is why you have to wear ear defenders in a datacentre, I believe). There is a risk that some components might suffer by being passively cooled, because in effect that's what removing the case has done, but I reckon you should be alright. Only time will tell, so in the meantime, keep on crunching!

Can't see the cats wearing ear defenders lol, been running since Tuesday 24/7 as there is no top panel passive heatsinks + memory are ok to touch while crunching. As its in the passage way just under the stairs its quite cool with good air flow, got a small portable fan ready if things get hot in the summer. Or might just leave it the way it is or mod the panel so it will fit over the fans with 2/3x40mm fans installed at the back of the panel to exhaust the hot air. |

I can just about live with the noise that my four machines in the loft produce (I just turn the background music up!) but heat may be an issue as it warms up. The new workstation gives off serious amounts of heat with two 160 watt CPUs running 24/7!
