KerSamson, I too hope you don't leave permanently. I run mostly AMD machines under Linux. I've learned a lot from your posts on the forum and deeply respect your contribution to WCG.
----------------------------------------My present experience is that I am not having any problem running Vina on my low-end Linux AMD machines. GFAM, SN2S, and DSFL ran with only the very rare invalid, as is the new version of FAAH. This is on a Phenom II X4 910e and two E-350s, so all pre-Bulldozer. I also run WCG on my husband's A10-5700, on which he has Windows 7, and have had no problems there either. ![]() |

Same here. Currently running 20 cores with Linux and very rarely get any invalids. I also have 4 cores with Win7 that rarely get invalids.

Hi KerSamson, I will let one of our technical guys answer your question about the VINA issues you're having. But in the meantime, I wanted to make it clear that just because FightAIDS@Home moved to VINA, it doesn't mean that VINA is becoming the standard software. As the Scripps researchers explained, for FAAH, VINA makes sense for some experiments, but AutoDock will still be valuable in others - so they'll flip back and forth between them over time.
What software application each project runs on is something that the research team decides on - we don't try and push one tool over another. They have to pick what's best for their work. I also want to confirm that our next project launch (a cancer project which is in pre-beta testing at this stage) will not be on VINA. Hope that helps, would love to see you stick around :) |

Thankyou ever so much jhindo for this snippet of information - very much appreciated, and it's this kind of 'openness' that I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more of in the future ![]() ![]() |

----------------------------------------Thank you: I echo the sentiments expressed by qb009761. I eagerly await the receipt of more cancer project tasks (beta and production) to feed my three hungry machines. These are busy processing other tasks but will turn to the cancer project as soon as tasks are available. Hi, KerSamson: Please don't leave us - take a couple of months off, relax and return when the cancer project starts later in the year. John ![]() crunching, crunching, crunching. I was about to pull the plug until this little bit of info came out. Would be nice if WCG would be more open instead of waiting for someone who contrubutes allot threatens to leave. I shut one rig down and leave my duallie to crunch one wu to keep things going. Also crunch climate. Lets hope a new project starts soon to keep folks crunching. Crunch on!

cjslman, I do believe KerSamson's issue, is with the AMD cores throwing a 'wobbly' every now and again (by the sounds of it, it's more 'now' than 'then') I have three Intel machines that every single WU they return that is VINA based is invalid. So it is not limited to just AMD machines. The original FAAH WU's run just fine, so did DSFL, before that so did HPF2 and before that HCC. Now if I get a Vina on them, I just dump it. Might as well as I already know it will be invalid. |

What are your processors, OS, Boinc version, and anything else you can think of that might be relevant ? Has ther been any change with the 706 version vs. the 703 version ? Cheers

I have also had no problems with 7.06 on Win7 64-bit (E8400 Core2 Duo at 3.0 Ghz, not overclocked), and only a few problems with 7.03. I am now using BOINC 7.2.5 64-bit, but used the WCG version of 7.2.7 (32-bit) for a while too; both work very well. But I leave my machine on 24/7, and reboot only as necessary.
----------------------------------------Recently I have started running BOINC as a service again, after using the non-service install for over a year to allow accessing my GPUs. But occasionally BOINC itself seemed to cause minor problems with the desktop (e.g., icons disappear, sometimes problem with my video LAN player). Running it as a service seems to help that.
