sad Boinc manager on Lubuntu 13.04 [Resolved]

Hi,

I have been running WCG for some years now, and have had several different Linux systems during that time. I've never really got a handle on the install process each time I've changed my operating system, but usually muddled through to get it running. It's running now, but the manager is borked.

I'm running a clean install of Lubuntu 13.04, but with /home on a separate partition, and that may be the cause of the trouble. To re-install the Boinc client and manager, I downloaded the recommended file, boinc_6.10.58_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh, and then looked at the install instructions again on the WCG page. This suggested that I might want to install using apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager. So I did that.

I could find no way to start the boinc manager, until I used a menu editor in Lubuntu ("menulibre" I installed separately) and created a new launcher. This turned out to use "boincmgr" as the start command, which I have not seen documented anywhere. Once started, I re-attached to my projects and started crunching. However, the manager is broken.

The version started this way is boinc-manager 7.0.27(x86). The menu bar has only a single entry, and that is truncated and reads "Fil". At least I can shut it down that way!

Having realised that all is not well, I then followed the installation instructions for the file I had downloaded, as opposed to the "apt-get install" ones. Installation went as expected, and using ~/Downloads/BOINC/run_manager results in a functioning manager version 6.10.58 which connects to the already running projects and gives me all the usual items on the menu bar. However, of course, since it is opened from the terminal it disappears when I close the terminal. I can now have both managers open at the same time. :-) On re-boot, the only manager available from the menu is the one I put there, 7.0.27 with the broken menu bar.

Now, I suppose I could simply uninstall boinc manager, and then re-install from the downloaded file, to cure my problem. I would then have to try to install a menu entry for it, probably by guess work. Surely, though, it should not be this difficult to install WCG on Lubuntu, a simplified derivative of Ubuntu? What is going wrong? Is it old config files in my /home directory screwint things up? How do I find out, and what is the best way to cure it?

Thanks for any help offered.
Ian

EDIT: While reviewing my earlier posts from when I tried briefly to use Lubuntu 12.04, I came across a possible answer involving the installation of a ppa:repository entry. I've tried that this time, and after apt-get update I get the following in the terminal:
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/pkg-boinc/testing/ub...ain/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found
I have no idea why this has not worked.

Here is a thread in which SekeRob talks about Synaptic: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ead,35265_offset,0#424727

Re: Boinc manager on Lubuntu 13.04

OK Thanks for that pointer Lawrence. Here's what I did, for anyone coming across this thread with similar problems:

From SekeRob's thread I found the link to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
where I downloaded the current stable manager for Linux 64 bit. Having installed this, I then edited the menu entry to change the command to read: /home/xxx/Downloads/BOINC/run_manager
A reboot then sorted out the issue of too many managers running and I'm happily sorted.

None of this is very encouraging to non linux gurus, or any newbie coming into a lightweight linux from Windows. Luckily, the straight Ubuntu doesn't seem to have these problems, and as I recall I didn't have much trouble with Mint 13. However, other refugees will be avoiding the heavyweights as I am myself.

Re: Boinc manager on Lubuntu 13.04

There is a bug in the Linux version of BOINC 7.0.27. As you discovered, the pull-down menu bar doesn't show up. Oddly enough, if you use your mouse to resize the BOINC manager window (pull the left edge farther to the left), the full menu bar appears. That version of BOINC is fine otherwise. I have been running it under Lubuntu 13.04 ever since 13.04 was released.

That is to say, the problem is with one particular version of BOINC, not with Linux itself. It's unfortunate that that version of BOINC is in the repository for Ubuntu 13.04.

Thanks kateiacy, it's good to know it's not just me then! (Or something I id wrong). I'm now happily on 7.0.65 which seems to be just fine.
