Hello, if this has already been addressed somewhere and you can give me a link (or some search terms) that'd be great, I looked but didn't find anything.
I recently had my hard drive die on one of my systems that does a lot of WCG crunching, not to much of a problem. However I was wondering if anybody knew what file (if one exists at all locally) I could try and recover from the old drive so that in that statistics section of the website it wouldn't think this is a new computer and just continue updating the old stats. I'm running windows 8 pro x64 and BOINC 7.0.64. |

If you can recover the BOINC data folder (directory) it contains the files required to identify the PC. If you did not specify new folders when you installed BOINC on the machine I believe it will be in the "C:\Program Files" or "C:\Program Files (x86)" folder.
----------------------------------------If you can't recover the "data" folder, if you specify the same computer name when you rebuild the drive there is a possibility that WCG will identify it as a registered device and associate it with that device ID. I write possibility because I've only had it work once out of many, many rebuilds. Good luck!

"C:\Program Files" or "C:\Program Files (x86)" ?
Dr Alois A. Light moments later, the realization will strike, that the correct [default] location on Windows is C:\ProgramData\BOINC ! Usually hidden on Windows, but reachable by typing the address location directly, or changing the file browser settings to show hidden files/folders [not recommended for the inexperienced]. The 5 elements that are checked for a device ID and to get an automatic recovery, are to me a theory in its functioning. Really, when you don't have a backup to restore to that contains the original device references [numeric device ID and authenticator], and don't have these in place [before] first connect to WCG servers, it's too late, and a new device will have been created. There's a Help item in Start Here FAQ. |

Thanks for all the replies, I originally tried to copy from the app data folder, but it seems I copied it from the laptop I had the old drive plugged into via SATA to USB, oops.
I've copied the files over again (overwriting the ones that are there after finishing the cache). The statistics tab in the BOINC manager seems to be correct, I guess I'll figure out if it worked on the website tonight. Thanks again for the help. |
