LINUX Users : Choose Totem Video Player instead of VLC Media Player, if you want to give BOINC / World Community Grid as much resources as possible (?)
My goal is to give BOINC as much resources as possible while I am watching videos. With the help of Linux system control I figured out, that while watching videos with totem video player the following processes use CPU resources: totem: between 10 and 15 per cent of CPU compiz: about 3 to 5 per cent of CPU pulseaudio: 2 or 5 per cent of CPU If I use VLC media Player to watch the same vido the following processes occur in Linux system control: VLC: from 8 to 11 per cent of CPU compiz: about 5 per cent of CPU pulseaudio; 1 per cent of CPU My conclusion would be, that it is better to use VLC video player instead of using totem media player if you want to give as much resources to BOINC as possible. As a man who has nothing to do with programming neither totem video player nor VLC media player I do not have in depth insight however (maybe both programs use more processes taking away CPU power than I know?) I would like to ask for confirmation by fellow crunchers being more close to VLC and/or totem than I am. In the end of this thread, I would like to have a solid recommendation whether to use totem video player or VLC media player if you want to leave as much resources for BOINC as possible. I think that this question is really important because watching videos probably is one of the most popular tasks carried out on PCs. Thank you for any answers. Maybe let us use this thread for LINUX only, and open a separate one for WINDOWS in order to work out differences between those operating systems? Best wishes to all. Martin Schnellinger |

I use SMplayer. Uses a steady 4% of the CPU. Never seen it go over 6%.

Since BOINCTasks tracks both Elapsed [time an BOINC science application is allowed to run] and the CPU time [the spare cycles actually used], then computes the efficiency from that, it's as easy as can be with this program [I run it in WINE on Linux, when it runs, but mostly monitor all hosts from one BT instance on w W7 machine in the LAN]. Additionally, BT maintains result history for the 2 time measures and stores the efficiency percent. In short, monitor with this tool and you've got solid tracking how much any activity impacts crunching.
