GPU under performing!

Hi All
I know HCC GPU work is over, but I've just noticed one of my machines is showing the GPU as:
12/05/2013 19:11:30 | | CAL: ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 7700 series (Cape Verde) (CAL version 1.4.1741, 1024MB, 984MB available, 960 GFLOPS peak)
12/05/2013 19:11:30 | | OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 7700 series (Cape Verde) (driver version 1124.2 (VM), device version OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (1124.2), 1024MB, 984MB available, 960 GFLOPS peak)

While another machine shows:

12/05/2013 07:53:02 | | CAL: ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 7700 series (Cape Verde) (CAL version 1.4.1741, 1024MB, 984MB available, 3200 GFLOPS peak)
12/05/2013 07:53:02 | | OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 7700 series (Cape Verde) (driver version 1084.4 (VM), device version OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (1084.4), 1024MB, 984MB available, 3200 GFLOPS peak)

The machine that has a fault is an AMD FX-8350x8/GA-970A-UD3 MB/16Gb/HD7770/Corsair 650 PSU/Win7-64

I've removed the driver and restarted, reinstalled, changed the GPU (to another, the same, that had previously been in it) all with no change. I have also tried a clean install of the original drivers with a single GPU with no change. as you can see from above, the penultimate to the latest version of the drivers are installed.

These GPU's all worked fine for HCC GPU work, I don't know how long this has been an issue though

Any ideas?

I'm thinking MB fault/PSU fault or 2 duff GPU's

Your comments would be much appreciated

Re: GPU under performing!

Need more info. Are you running another project on the GPUs? If so which one. Are all of the machines using AMD CPUs or do some use Intel? Are the GPUs running in PCI-E 2.0 or 3.0 slots?

Re: GPU under performing!

I understand your GPUs are AMD. What about your CPUs?

Are the run times on each task close to the same for each machine?

Re: GPU under performing!

Sorry nanoprobe, all machines are AMD processors too

No, those on the faulty one are much longer, the last Milkyway tasks came in showing 4minutes 30s, but were taking just under 15 minutes.

That's what prompted me to investigate...

Re: GPU under performing!

Is with all that on/off/on, the OpenCL driver still different between the 2 machines?

Re: GPU under performing!

Rob - I checked the driver versions the older one is the original (CD) that came with the GPU, the newer one is the penultimate version 12.9.xxx (current is 13.4 I think) all the other machines use the original driver 1040, they all work fine with no problems.

Below is the line from the log after removing the Catalyst software suite & drivers. This displays the card spec correctly!

13/05/2013 17:59:18 | | CAL: ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 7700 series (Cape Verde) (CAL version 1.4.1741, 1024MB, 984MB available, 3200 GFLOPS peak)
13/05/2013 17:59:18 | | App version needs OpenCL but GPU doesn't support it

Then after the original driver install & reboot, no change. The system has no onboard GPU so with it connected to the monitor I can see the desktop as normal. So it is working.

I'€™ve tested the PSU, changed the GPU (removed driver etc & installed correct one for replacement GPU, rebooted etc) for another model and still get the same error lines in the Boinc log.

I even removed VNC as I thought the Morror driver may have been interferring, I moved the machine to the test bench and connected a monitor etc all works as expected, with the exception of the same error lines in the Boinc log

Re: GPU under performing!

Do a clean uninstall of the drivers.
First remove them from the Control Panel/Programs and Features/AMD Catalyst Install Manager, then reboot.
Then, run Driver Fusion (free version is OK) to remove the AMD Display drivers and reboot.
http://treexy.com/products/driver-fusion

Then install the latest ones, including at least the Display Drivers and the SDK (I don't bother with all the others, except maybe the Audio drivers).

Re: GPU under performing!

With the exception of the driver fusion bit, I've done all that, but I'll give it a try, as removing the display drivers may be the key...

Many thnaks for the advice...

Re: GPU under performing!

Think the 'Remove display drivers and clean before installing any different set' is one of those that falls in the 'general [strongly] advised' categories for successful GPU computing. Read it many times here.

Penultimate... not so sure about that in the GPU crunch department either... There's always someone who's got to test first, but would check out DC forums elsewhere first for any sirens. But, as the revelation went recently on these forums, there are very few BIO directed GPU projects, and that's the complicated stuff.
