Privacy vs. surveillance

This is bound to be a contentious one, so let's see what people think...

Google GLASS was released to some 3rd party developers 2 days ago, and the 'privacy campaigners' are predictably not happy. After all, anyone and everyone filming things in public places can only be a bad thing, right?

But then... Boston bomber caught on film?

...suddenly wall-to-wall crowd-sourced CCTV doesn't seem so bad, does it?

Let's hope they manage to catch whoever did this, using all the technology available. And if more people filming things all the time makes this sort of atrocity harder to get away with, I'm all for it.

Re: Privacy vs. surveillance

Of all the things I have to worry about, concern about being filmed in public ranks right along side concern about the sun going nova in about 5 billion years. A non issue as far as I am concerned.

Me too - exactly. It's a constant surprise to me how many people seem to view it as a gross invasion of privacy - IT'S IN A PUBLIC PLACE!

I guess you can tell which side of the argument I fall on by now.

Re: Privacy vs. surveillance

Of course, no one would be against the cameras being used for this purpose.

But how many want to live in a world of 1984 ?

1984 was about cameras and intrusion into every part of your life, public and private. I said I was not worried about cameras in public places. These two ideas are not the same. (I know the lawyer types are going to split hairs on what is public and what is private, but I am not going there. I am attempting to use some common sense here.)

Re: Privacy vs. surveillance

Not today. But when the cameras are upgraded and they can see (up close) and HEAR.

The FBI,CIA, NSA and other government alphabet soup agencies can probably already count the number of hairs on my head from space even if I am wearing a hat. My life is not that interesting that I am worried about the government snooping on it.

Re: Privacy vs. surveillance

Pretty much the same here... public means (and spells) public (not pubis). You want to film me in the street?... be my guest. I see no invasion of privacy. Besides, the Google Glass is visible (like on the front of your face)... a hidden/discreet smartphone, maybe not so.

Re: Privacy vs. surveillance

I agree that public is public. However, I wonder if we will ever talk about the Google Glass being half full or half empty. Which half would be considered optimistic?
