Can't connect to computer with BOINC version 7.0.29

I run Fedora Linux, and until I had to reinstall Fedora 17 (Xfce) all was well. Now, I've reinstalled BOINC and got it running, but the manager can't connect to the computer. I followed the instructions at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Fedora, including those on connecting to the computer, but it just won't. And, the last time I rebooted, I had to connect to all of my projects again, meaning that any work that wasn't uploaded was lost. I've posted a question about this at the boinc forum, but there's little activity there, and after over 24 hours, my question's only been viewed 19 times and is still the most recent post, so I came here. I haven't tried rebooting, recently, as I generally don't except for kernel updates or other urgent reasons, so I don't know what's going to happen.

Re: Can't connect to computer with BOINC version 7.0.29

I run several machines with Linux Mint and occasionally, for some unknown reason, the BOINC manager will disconnect. There is nothing I have found to get it to reconnect except to to fully shutdown - not reboot - and do a cold start. So far this has worked for me. Really wish I knew why it disconnects itself for no known reason.
Cheers

What I want to know is, why doesn't a reboot do the job? If there's something left in /tmp, that might be causing it, unless Mint puts that into a ramdisk, as Fedora does so that it gets nuked at reboot.

I would also like to know.

Re: Can't connect to computer with BOINC version 7.0.29

Just today, I had to shut down my computer because my onboard NIC died and I had to install a PCI NIC. BOINC Manager still claims that it can't connect, but I can tell that it's working, and all of the data shows up in the manager. Maybe it's a spurious error?

Re: Can't connect to computer with BOINC version 7.0.29

Hi,

Can you try this?

1. sudo apt-get remove boinc
2. sudo apt-get autoremove
3. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costamagnagianfranco/boinc
4. sudo apt-get update
5. sudo apt-get install boinc

It will remove BOINC, add a PPA for the Latest BETA BOINC version, then it will update the PPA's and finally install the latest version(currently 7.0.65). I am using it on Linux Mint 14 without any problems.

Try it.

Re: Can't connect to computer with BOINC version 7.0.29

JoeZeff,

sounds like the the data directory is being placed in a temporary directory. Something that either gets cleared during reboot, ramdisk. When boinc is running, please take alook at the first 20 lines in your messages to see where the data directory is being placed.

Also, I assume you are attempting to connect your manager by using "connect to computer" in the advanced view and typing in 'localhost' when it asks for machine name. after typing in localhost you should be able to press enter, does that reconnect the manager to the client?

Thanks,
-Uplinger

The next time it disconnects, I will try that.

Re: Can't connect to computer with BOINC version 7.0.29

In case anybody wanders through here looking for help, I found this walkthrough at the Fedora Forum and it worked for me: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=313161&highlight=BOINC
