Hi Keith, I have been seeing much lower compute times than I expect, so I decided to check all of my systems to see if any of them had a problem. One of my bigger crunchers received an update from microsoft and needed to be rebooted. My other desktop had been rebooted but no one told me about it; I checked the work being done on that system and all is ok. Perhaps, now, my compute time will improve somewhat. I think I have a couple of advantages on you - I only have two machines to keep up with and it's easy to check on them each night when I post the stats. I do have a bit of a routine when it comes to managing them though. Windows update is set to just notify me when there are new updates. I install them when it's convenient for me and, since I often don't get the notice on both machines at the same time, when I get it on one, I'll force a check on the other and update them both. I also normally clear out by browser cache and trash bin and then go do an optimized defrag. I try to do this last bit weekly even if there's no updates. I've learned over the years that this seems to minimize the occurance of problems and keeps the machines "tuned up". You may have enough machines that my routine wouldn't work for you. |
