Re: So, what has the grid actually DONE?

I'm with you in terms of just doing it for the science. I thought there was a place where all of the published papers we had contributed to where referenced by project though. If not, we need to do that post haste.

However even more important is having a plain english abstract for each one that shows why the paper was published - IOW, what makes it a valuable contribution to the field of research and, if possible, how it contributes to the ultimate goal of the specific project - that's paramount.

I agree with you, twilyth. Check out GPUGRID. They post research results and papers written, with the contribution of each person stated and individual badges given, based on the actual results contributed. Rick

Re: So, what has the grid actually DONE?

You know, simply adding a new page to the website for this would go a long ways. Call it RESULTS and add it to the main navbar ("Home About Us Research Forums Statistics My Grid Download"). Just have a short sentence with a link to the science site, paper, whatever. Not something that would seem to be a whole lot of work. I've read over the years about the various items but it's been hit or miss seeing the individual forum post. There have been great things like FAAH identifying a potential new class of drugs for treating HIV. There's been the unexpected like the Malaria project finding a compound that may be a new antibiotic for treating TB, especially the resistent strains. That's basic science for you. Maybe the admins could offer their insight on adding such a page?

Re: So, what has the grid actually DONE?

I agree. I think the minimum would to have to be, as i've already said I suppose, a plain english paragraph on each article from the researchers saying what was accomplished and what the research it covered could lead to.

That should be pretty simple I would think. It's basically translating the abstract into everyday language with some minimal background and color.

But I've actually know a few of these people in my personal life and many are quite passionate about what they do. I don't know if we get this in every case but given the fact that these labs have several if not a few dozen researchers, post docs, lab assistants, etc., I would also like to see something behind that goes into a little more detail. Maybe a one page thumbnail sketch of what was covered in the paper, how the WCG data was used, etc. Also, maybe it would be possible to have video links to interviews about what motivates these folks and gets them excited about their work.

That's why I recently joined GPUGrid. I waited until the ASUS GTX 650 Tis came down by $40 each and bought two to run 24/7.

I guess ya pays yer money and takes yer choice with research and GPUGrid, HCC GPU and POEM GPU tasks appear valuable to me. I really like the GPUGrid method of showing the published results to which a cruncher contributes (I also have had a 50 year love affair with Spain). As I live in Canada I crunch HCC GPU tasks. Some friends have benefited from cancer treatments used by the Ontario Cancer Institute (50 km from my house) and POEM research led to a NOBEL prize a while back.

Re: So, what has the grid actually DONE?

Would be great to have links posted to articles that show how WCG contributed toward there experiments and findings. Something to show are combined computing power that shows some kind of progress. Word of mouth only goes so far.

Re: So, what has the grid actually DONE?

Honestly, who are you to say it hasn't benefited mankind? Just that you see no applicable use for it doesn't mean it's not vauable. Most of the modern technologies today are spin-offs of completely unrelated ventures. The technology behind the MRI wasn't even considered for medical use when it was developed, until someone took a 2nd look at it and saw the potential.

Yeah, a lot of the crunching we do may not have any obvious benefit; but that doesn't mean it's useless. Who knows what this information could be used for.
