No, no space problem. Another wingman on the same wu succeeded, so it's very bizarre. Those filenames are bizarre, but the app could be constructing them since those extensions aren't in the zip file, or in the slots on other hosts. Looking into other solutions (read, other linux), which I don't have time to pursue but this is annoying me ;)


ETA: since I'm not thinking I'll learn the answer to my original question, I spent way too much time looking for alternatives, and finally cussed my way through setting up coLinux with enough resources to make cep2 happy. It's still using an old 6.x boinc client but the OS is at least newer than under andlinux; if this seems to function reliably I'll look into finding a package for the current client or installing it manually.
