Why is my BOINC blank?

There are no notices, no projects, no tasks, no transfers, no stats, and no disk usage. I couldn't access my page because there were no tasks to allow access through. I had to get here through the WWG home page, which still has me signed in and still has my stats/grid/etc. pages. The run time graph is still going as of this moment (still Feb. 15 here), though the run time is very low (my computer works 24/7 at 100% for WWG). Feb. 11th showed a small run time, the 12th was at 150, the 13th was 50, the 14th 75, and today the 15th is only 25 (matched by Jan. 29) - and of course points and results are equally erratic. But what concerns me is the totally blank BOINC Manager page. Does anybody have an idea what's going on? This has never happened to me in the 4 years (on 2/26) I've been running WWG, but I've received no notice in email about anything unusual happening. confused

Re: Why is my BOINC blank?

Forgot to say that I'm running only the Leishmaniasis project, but I checked their forum and website and found nothing to indicate they're down or finished. And I'm still logging runtime.

Re: Why is my BOINC blank?

Hi William,

A blank BOINC Manager [BM] usually goes together with a message right bottom of the BM, saying something like "connecting to localhost", or "can't connect to localhost". The meaning is that either boinc.exe, the core client, is not running [check in Task Manager if it is]

1) Select Processor Tab
2) Hit Show processes for all users button left bottom (assumes W7/W8)
3) Check if boinc.exe is running, or
4) If installed as service, go to Service tab and see if boinc has "running" in status column. If not, right click on the entry and Start (but why was it not is the question then)

or somehow the BM has no rights, or lost access to the password. In the BM go to the Advanced menu > Select Computer > type localhost, no password and OK and tell us what happens.

If none of that works, find the installer pack and run it again, choosing Repair. Then boot the computer and check again.

N.B. The DSFL project is expected to run till the end of 2013 on present 583 protein targets. Per update last week there were still 261 to go.

Re: Why is my BOINC blank?

Thanks for all the tips, Rob. Haven't had time to implement them yet, but the BM says "connected to local host (6.12.35)" - so I figured don't bother with steps 1-4 and went to computer>localhost - at present it's "communicating with BOINC client - please wait" - (tick...tick...tick...) and 10 minutes later it's still communicating and telling me to please wait.

I have no clue about the "installer pack", don't see it in any of the drop-down menus. Do you mean just dl the app again?

Re: Why is my BOINC blank?

BTW - how do you get that chart embedded in your post? I see them all the time but don't know how to get my own. I'm talking about the one with the green globe on the left, showing points/terms/etc.

biggrin
Read the thread "I made a new forum signature." by SNURK in Chat. This will tell you how to embed the globe in your posts.

Re: Why is my BOINC blank?

William,

The "connected to local host (6.12.35)" is perfect, meaning that the BM is connected to the running client. Now the question is why is all blank? Go to Advanced menu, Event Log/Message view and post content so we can read set up. Also confirm that in the project tab WCG is listed as attached and in the status column the work fetch is not indicated as suspended, *BUT*, since you say there is not, go to Tools > Add/Attach to project, select WCG from the list or enter http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org enter, then enter forum member name and forum password. I hope the registration does not have a problem with the member name since there's a space in it [think not]. If it works, then you're fine and somehow lost the project from the BM registration.

If the Select computer does not work, usually rebooting the computer and starting the BM again auto-connects with the boinc.exe, the actual controller program of all the science jobs that run.

The "Repair" is indeed when just running the installer of 6.12.35 again, but there's for now no need to do that given your reply.

Re: Why is my BOINC blank?

Hi Rob
Just now woke up and got back to the computer and saw the replies here. There was no change in the BM - still blank, still connected and communicating/please wait. To get to Advanced menu I had to cancel the "communicating" request. Event log showed "restarting" and the tasks just reappeared on the display, but they were suspended. I closed BM and reopened, and the tasks were back and running. A mystery, but it seems to be back.

Event log also showed a new version of BM is available, and the Notices tab (formerly blank like everything else) now has the new version notice/link and two others from Feb. 7 and 11. So all seems to have fixed itself somehow. The runtime/points/results graph on My Grid show a radical drop-off after Feb 14 - I had melanoma surgery on Valentine's Day, so maybe it was a sympathy crash? Who knew BOINC was so intuitive? I wonder when the update became available - maybe BM was on strike because I hadn't updated, but I didn't even know until now (I don't pay much attention - I just have it running all the time and check up on it every once in a great while).

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll dl the update now.

Re: Why is my BOINC blank?

Hello William LeGro,
Glad you fixed the stuck communicating task. As for updates, BOINC has a new beta every week. Or so it seems. At intervals, they send out the red message. Update at your own risk unless you haunt the forums and know what the users think of each version. It will be a while before there is a new WCG-sponsored version.
