Time to pack it in - A philosophical discussion

When I started here, I had a fellow countryman with over 11M credits and who was dormant. I wondered how you could invest so much time and then give up. Now I know. Having passed hem (or her) long ago, I may have reached the same frame of mind.

There is nothing left for me to do. I have 100 years, a Sapphire badge in every project that I could get. Some projects with 3, 5, 10 and 15 years. There is nothing left to prove to me or anyone else. There is no recognition for the nearly 4 years of work. You see, no one actually cares if you are here because the work will get picked up by someone else.

It is safe to say that every one of my 218K WU means that someone else does not have to crunch them. It is also true to say that every WU that I do not crunch will get done by someone else.

I didn't join WCG to make friends but I have gained a great deal of respect for many of you involved: mclaver, lawrencehardin, Mr.Kermit, knreed and Sekerob. All hard working, respectful, intelligent and committed people.

So I have turned off my big boxes for everyday crunching and will use them for Beta testing and new projects only. The rest of my farm will slowly dwindle away and WCG will not be installed on the hardware replacements. cool

Happy trails, astrolabe.
You are not a replaceable number. You are your own unique viewpoint.
Enjoy your journey through life.

Sorry to see you go, but if the fire is gone you need to do what is best for you. I have enjoyed reading your posts. Good luck in whatever path you choose next.
Cheers

Re: Time to pack it in

As the above posters have said, if you feel that your 'fire' has gone out in regards to WCG, then I really do wish you the best for the future.

Hopefully you'll keep having a nosy back though - as I'm sure that some new projects will be along soon...

Re: Time to pack it in

Sorry to see you go and wish you the best of luck and success on the road before you... but I think you (and the rest of us) still have a lot to give to this project. This enormous effort still needs dedicated crunchers... we need to do the heavy lifting... not in years (too many years), but in months so the scientists can bring solutions to the world's maladies sooner (ideally in just a few years).

Take care,

CJSL

Re: Time to pack it in

Understand where your coming from. Always said I will make the same decision once I get to 100 years myself. Maybe consider a different project just for a change. Good luck on your future projects.

"There is nothing left for me to do."

On the contrary, every WU crunched is a benefit to mankjnd and lessens suffering. Recruiting crunchers with tuned desktop power is becoming harder as consumers move to tablet and smartphones.

If you have the spare capacity why not continue to use it to aid your fellow humans?

Points and badge collecting really doesn't matter, being involved does. Every WU crunched is needed.

Stay! Crunch! WCG needs you more than ever!

Thanks for your more than generous 100 year contribution to the Grid!!!

See you around when the next project hits.

PS: Are you sure you want to leave your points total just short of 100 mil points? wink

Re: Time to pack it in

Sorry you decided to pair it down, astrolabe., but my reading is you'll be contributing for a while longer, in lesser powered fashion. Thank you.

Spin: Wondered if there's a connection between "why are we loosing members" threads, yet another one popped up few days ago [without any effort reflective of an attempt to read up on past discussion by the starter], the stats that seemed to have responded in kind [week on week day for day decline when we're in a seeming very stable environment], and this decision. Maybe there's a chronic shortage of vitamin D for lack of outdoors exposure: http://www.webmd.com/depression/news/20120627...ency-linked-to-depression . Spinning away... my machines carry on whilst they can be let to do that.
