I'm trying to reinstall the BOINC manager so I can move my data folder (I just can't get the comfig files to work right.) Every time I try to uninstall the current version or install over it, I get this error: "Error 1606: Could not access network location C::\Users\public\Desktop\"
I've looked this error up, and it seems to be a Windows error, a problem with the registry. Normally people have the error with "%Userprofile%" or "C:\Users," but I've never seen it with C::\ except in my case. I searched through my whole registry looking for "C::\" just in case an entry was messed up, but it didn't find anything. Other than that, I've tried the typical things: changing permissions on the public desktop (all the public folders exist, by the way,) changing registry entries between "%userprofile% and "C:\Users," and even one of those MS Fixit programs, but nothing has worked. Is there anything else that might help? |

Hello Kerboose,
What version of BOINC are you running? There are many install packages. What version of Windows are you using? Have you been upgrading BOINC or is your old install that is giving you trouble a clean install? Lawrence |

Alright, I got my manager actually working (after trying to move the data directory,) but I still have the same problem with the installer.
My computer runs Windows 7 x64, and I'm on the latest version (6.10.58.) I have the installer because I tried uninstalling the program and it doesn't work, so I tried installing over it, which was equally futile. My main question is why my error reads 'C::\Users' instead of 'C:\Users.' It may be the cause of the problem. |

The latest public is 7.0.28 I presume your logged in as admin and/or start the installer as admin? |

It's a classic case where the old installer in the path it prints, is no longer there [it was on your desktop it seems]. You need to use Microsoft Cleanup to force the removal of the old BOINC installation.
https://www.google.it/search?q=microsoft+cleanup+utility+windows+7 Officially no longer supported, but it still works well. Their official solution, referred below did not work for me in one instance, but MSCleanup did. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fo...54-4181-b585-389918e7a286 |

The latest public is 7.0.28 I presume your logged in as admin and/or start the installer as admin? I downloaded the version from WorldCommunityGrid, which is still 6.10.58, according to the download page. And yes, I'm running as an admin.
