Hi,
Just installed Windows 8 x64, yesterday, along with Boinc 7.0.28. Connected to WCG and started running projects - no problem. Happy camper. After a reboot, Boinc displayed "disconnected" on bottom of advanced view and no work units were showing, but task manger said WU were running. After playing around, I found that I could connect via Advanced -> Select Computer -> "127.0.0.1" in host box, no password. Can I get this done automatically via a config file? Thanks |

If you managed to install 7.0.28 after a W8-64 clean install, that's pretty amazing. WCG recommends 7.0.31, at least to ensure proper configuration.
Normally BOINC Manager remembers the localhost connection aka 127.0.0.1, but in that case both fields can be left blank and a simple OK. How to automate that... don't know. Suggest you do what WCG recommends and follow the sticky post at top of all WCG forums. Let us now how things proceed. |

Hi Rob,
Helps if you are not dealing with an idiot (moi). Re-installed boinc with the non-default options:
Yes, I know that Protected Execution can cause problems with GPU cards, but my card is not really suited to GPU crunching anyway. It all appears to be working as desired. Fingers crossed. |

Great, You and WeCG are the winners, [but what version did you "re"-install?].

It also helps to know if he did a clean install of Win8 or if it was an upgrade...

Well, it helps if all poster volunteered more ... we know e.g. that if you were on W7 with a BOINC installed and upgraded to W8, the install with 7.0.28 works fine... even 6.10.58 will work, but *not for all* and that's the whole point of recommending 7.0.31, for we know, without having to discuss any particulars, that this one will create the various BOINC limited accounts correctly, for a much greater number than with 7.0.28, *first* install run. Development has done more tweaking that went into 7.0.32-7.0.47 where we are now.

Hi Rob,
I did a clean install of win8 x64, despite several attempts to upgrade from win7, kept getting problems with VS2010 SP1. I reinstalled boinc 7.0.28 x64, because http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php said it was a stable version, and 7.0.44 is described as potentially unstable. As an aside, first WU returned to WCG, so it seems to be OK. |
