Re: Problem installing boinc on Ubuntu 12.10

As far as I know 310.32 is the latest certified driver from nvida so perhaps I should select that one

Nvidia in supported products.

Yes, that looks about right.

Re: Problem installing boinc on Ubuntu 12.10

Tried "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" to get all the latest upgrades but the boincmanager still is 7.0.27 and not 7.0.28 and I sstill don't get any gpu based WU's from WCG or CC. As there was no problem running boinc under XP I still think I do something wrong under Mint 14.

Ok, I assume you are now running the 310.32 driver?

Is this shown as activated and in use in the "Additional driver" tool?

Can you post the first thirty or so lines from your event log. Found in :-
Advanced > Event log...
It should start with this message:
Wed 06 Mar 2013 15:22:55 NZDT | | Starting BOINC client version 7.0.27 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu

Or similar.

Re: Problem installing boinc on Ubuntu 12.10

The AD tab lists 3 choices for drivers.

The first one is X.Org X server. That is the driver from Ubuntu.

There is one that says "Using Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators from fglrx (proprietary)". That is the generally available driver from AMD.

There is one that says "Using Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators from fglrx-updates (proprietary)". That is a beta driver from AMD.

If you want to run GPU tasks you should choose either of the fglrx drivers depending on whether you want to run a generally available driver or a beta driver. I have two Linux rigs and am running the GA driver on one rig and the beta driver on the other rig.

Hope that helps.

OK, got to it and went to Synaptics Settings > Repositories > Additional Drivers tab, where the exact same was found as what captainjack described for the ATI. Was on X-org and loaded the proprietary. Here's hoping to finally get some GPU crunching out of this device [In Windows 7 the drivers are HP OEM locked], never allowing on to install an OpenCL capable driver.

Yes, additional shows "This device is using an alternative driver " following "Using NVIDIA binary Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU lib from nvidia-310 (open source)"

Just above the second one it there's also a 310 proprietary one but than it's experimental.

It doesn't show the installed nvidia driver however, which it did show running XP.

"No usable GPUs found" while I have a GTX460 !

Read somewhere it is possible boinc is started before the nvidia driver is loaded

Yes, that is the problem !!

I would try installing the proprietary 310.32 driver next.

In fact if I could I would start from scratch, with a clean install of the OS using the 310.32 driver proprietary & Additional driver tool.

Dont worry about doing ANY upgrades or updates until you have the driver usable in boinc, its not worth it until the basics are right.

Re: Problem installing boinc on Ubuntu 12.10

Is it possible and sufficient to uninstall all current, shown in Synaptic (fi ubuntu drivers-common) under installed, nvidia drivers and than install 310.32 pro ?
As I'm a complete newbie I'm glad I have it running at the moment.
First I would like to get a bit acquainted with the OS and the menu before retrying to get it running.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Would this get me the latest nvidia driver or not?

Oops : just uninstalled nvidia using Synaptic so I think not.

Just reinstalled 310 but sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade didn't get me boinc WCG gpu running. Still no usable gpu and no showing of the upper toolbar of the manager.

Installed Krusader, I am a Total Commander guy, and now it all gets a bit more accessible.

Re: Problem installing boinc on Ubuntu 12.10

Reinstalled Mint, reinstalled 310.32 and reinstalled boinc, but still 7.0.27. No GPU wuutjes.

It seems Mint isn't suitable for running Boinc in my case.

Well, got it running, restart boinc after the driver is installed, but now the screen is even slower than under XP. There are other projects that don't take that much gpu power runing boinc but wcg is very slow.
Also the card gets hotter than with XP.
