First off, Linux is Unix. Unix was famous as a programmer-friendly OS before falling hardware prices made the GUI (Graphic User Interface) de rigeur for computer novices.
Secondly, Linux is free, which cuts the overall cost of computer ownership dramatically, particularly if people decide to keep multiple computers in their household. Money is always important! |

lol...
free is a nice word, no? how about a very low chance of catching a virus or worm? the ability to customize and make things look, and maybe even work, the way you want it to. efficient/less overhead....grab an old machine that's running windows, throw linux on it...instant upgrade easy to access computers from another computer, without having to go through all sorts of vnc etc setup you'd have to do for windows....simply ssh into the box and play as needed. more secure for multiple users generally did i mention free? constantly developing...so troubles that arise(no such thing as perfect software) are patched quickly and probably other things i'm forgetting, just a quick list off the top of my head ![]() |

if you ever want to try linux without going through the hassle of installing it, there's a "live cd" version called knoppix you could play with. here
