HCC not running on my GPU

I can't get HCC to run on my ATI Radeon HD 5400.
I've installed the latest driver for the video GPU, removed BOINC and reinstalled it. I installed BOINC under the admin account. I’m using Win 7 and a dual core 2.7 GHz Intel and 2 GB memory.

I must be missing something

Re: HCC not running on my GPU

Go download GPU-Z from TechPowerUp and run it, let us know if it shows your OpenCL support as "checked".

If not, there is your problem. I had a similar issue and solved it by running the OpenCL install manually from the Catalyst driver install directory (example: C:\AMD\Support\13-1_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql\Packages\Apps\OpenCL64).

The "normal" install wasn't installing OpenCL support for some reason, but manually running that component install worked fine. GPU-Z then reported OpenCL support and BOINC started working with GPU WUs.

Re: HCC not running on my GPU

The text 'HD 5400' is not included in the list of known-good (for HCC1) GPUs. The nearest matching texts in the said list are:
'HD5x00 series (Redwood)'
'HD 5x00 series (Redwood)'
'HD5x00 series (Cedar)'
'HD 5x00 series (Cedar)'

If the above four nearest text match covers the HD 5400, the question then would be: Is the HD 5400 a Redwood else a Cedar? If neither, then I guess we can go: Houston, we may have a problem. wink

Re: HCC not running on my GPU

wolf 359,

More importantly, the HD 5400 is *not* in the list of officially rejected ATI/AMD cards https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=GPU#610 . As we know from the techs, even if 10-15% of the results are good for the series, they are continued to be allowed to receive HCC-GPU results. It then is probably the individual hardware/software mix/configuration that makes the difference between success or failure.

Please post us a result log copy of a failed task [go My Grid > Result Status > click in Status column on Error], and maybe an ATI expert will tell you it could be as simple as having to also install the ATI SDK.

ttyl

edit: Regrettably, the server distribution is out for an anticipated 24 hours starting 03:00 UTC this morning, so fetching work to test is at this time not possible.

Re: HCC not running on my GPU

Hi wolf 359,
We recommend using BOINC 7.0.31+ for GPU processing of HCC. Yes, WCG has not created a recommended version of BOINC 7 yet. We are working on it, but GPU computing is still experimental for us.

That only applies to Windows server editions. That's why you had to manually install the OpenCl support package. For a desktop OS the OpenCl support (APP SDK) is installed by default unless you do a custom install and exclude it.

My guess is that he's trying to use an outdated driver w/o the proper OpenCl support.

Re: HCC not running on my GPU

Success. Boinc version 7.0.44 is processing the HCC GPU tasks. Now I can test the overclocking of the GPU. Your advice is welcome. Thank you.

That's good to know. So, what did the trick?
