Re: regarding DB2 maintenance notice

I appreciate that it is too late to do anything about it now, but wouldn't it have been better to do the maintenance over the weekend so as to have less impact on the servers?

We debated this. We could have started the change ~15 hours ago. However, there would not have been time to send an eblast that would have been read by the majority of the volunteers prior to us starting the outage. We opted to send out the eblast with enough time for people to read it and take action to adjust their cache if they wanted to before we took the outage.

Also - there is only about a 5-8% difference in load on the servers on the weekends versus week days. A bigger difference shows up in the daily stats on the website because there are more results that are waiting for their wingman on the weekend than during a weekday. As a result, we decided that communication was more important than the load difference.

Re: regarding DB2 maintenance notice

Well all of my dedicated HCC-GPU rigs have a full complement of wu's, including the 2P octo Xeon with over 3K, which should last the full 24hr outage, so I'm a very happy cramper. Thank you sir!

Re: regarding DB2 maintenance notice

Preparations to provide a bridge for crunchers (as well as for WCG) for a planned outage seem to be going well. That's from my vantage-point as my machines have had plenty of supply-WUs lately -- noticeably more than the usual supply. The network has not disappointed either: the network response was fast and error-free. These things do not happen just because some people wanted it to happen; there was serious ground work to have it all come together... ok, as what was earlier wanted... biggrin

This early, I'm thus well prepared and well stocked with WUs. All I have to do now is to re-stock incrementally until the outage hits. I'm a happy camper too.

P.S.
knreed: nice explanation of the weekend-versus-weekdays picture at WCG as it relates to the coming outage. Most everything has been placed under perspective, and that can only be a good thing. smile

Thanks for that (your reply and the consideration). I had expected that the difference would have been greater but am never too proud to admit that I was wrong wink.

Wow. This is scarier than hearing last call at the bar/pub and realizing that the only thing making eyes at you is a big mean Doberman out on the sidewalk.

Re: regarding DB2 maintenance notice

Time gentlemen please. Last one out gets to take the dog home! shock

I've just remembered a question I meant to ask earlier. If you finish a task on time but cannot return it until the server starts to accept results again tomorrow, will they still be treated as being valid?

I guess what I am trying to say is, 'Will the deadlines be extended by 24 hours to reflect that it was impossible to return results on time'?

I'd abort nuke them from orbit.

It's the only way to be sure.

Re: regarding DB2 maintenance notice

coolstream, I'd guess that if they're done and basically ready-to-report, then get them sent back - after all, no repair WU's will have been sent out in the meantime...
