Re: How was your crunching progress this year?

Don't remember all I did on badge updates but I do remember a Beta going to emerald!
Without GPU-
From 12-30-2011 to today 12-28-2012 I accumulated
76.72 years
84,345,834 points
157,168 results

From 73 years to 149 years in Runtime
From 76.6 million to 157 million in Points
From 147 thousand to 304 thousand results

Also got a SNURK Crown and a Lightning bolt!
My best year ever chicken clown

Re: How was your crunching progress this year?

Well I've had a good crunching year.
2 years ago, went from 20 million points to 40 million,
This year 40 million to 80 million. (82 million but I'm going to count that in next years count biggrin
With GPU crunching, there is a slim possibility of doubling again.
I would need 220,000 PPD to do that. Currently getting around 190,000 if I'm not playing too many games.
I don't really have the money, but there is a 7850 for $159 at memory express. That should put me over the min needed, however If GPU crunching ends around June, then I'll be hurting.

Well best of Luck to all you crunchers,
May you reach your Goals for the New Year!

Re: How was your crunching progress this year?

I used to crunch SETI@Home, and then United Devices, back when I was in Uni (1995-2000 - can't remember when I started crunching in there).

I only recently (ish - December 2011) got back into crunching, and started up with WCG in February 2012......since then, I've amassed almost 30 years of run-time across the newer projects, almost 40 million points, and almost 62,000 results (see sig for actual results). Things seem quite a bit more organised, since the days I ran SETI/UD - mainly the addition of BOINC

Am hoping to add another decent server to my cluster at some point early 2013 - it was going to be this year, but some costly issues (primary one being a broken boiler flooding underneath the floor) have delayed that plan a tiny little bit...

Re: How was your crunching progress this year?

I am now getting over 200 results per day for the last week. Even though I am doing relatively well for me I am increasingly going down in my rank in results returned. I have kept close to my top ranking in cpu run time(I get about a month everyday) and have maintained the same page for points. I want the best way to accomplish this task and if IBM could purchase a supercomputer that could replace all of the members than so be it. I think that a supercomputer could do all that the members do and use a fraction of the electricity that the members do. I think the savings in the cost of electricity would alone justify the cost of the supercomputer.

Re: How was your crunching progress this year?

Started this year getting about 40k points per day, which wasn't too bad. Now getting about 130k points per day excluding GPU crunching, or about 800k including GPU contributions.

I think increasing my points per day by a factor of 20 makes for a very satisfactory year biggrin

Also, I entered the top 500 WCG crunchers today, which is a nice end-of-year milestone.

I wonder about that too, since IBM also has to buy all the networking equipment to support distributed computing. But on the other hand, I have a cool basement that does not require extra cooling, and it even saves me some heating costs in the winter. Assuming you are using recent-generation, energy-efficient CPUs, GPUs, motherboards, power supplies, etc., I expect that the home computers do better overall.

But if you use older equipment, it would probably be more energy-efficient to let a single large supercomputer do it.

Re: How was your crunching progress this year?

Don't lose sight of what the main intention of Distributed Computing (DC) is people - to utilise the spare cycles that millions of computers are wasting each and every day whilst they're waiting for their owners to surf to the next webpage/send their next e-mail/update their word-processing document etc. In general (of course, there's always the exception), most computers are only using 10-15% of their potential, thus, that's a lot of lost cycles.

Yes, of course, there are those who wish to take DC to a totally different level and really churn out those WU's. I, and am sure the many scientists/project sponsors/WCG techs (i.e., IBM) are extremely grateful for their contributions - but it is their decision, knowing the costs of the equipment/electricity and their own time etc. Of course, for myself (and I'm sure for the big hitters as well), this is one very good way of giving to charity - knowing that our contributions aren't going to be syphoned off, but to be used in directly progressing the research that needs to be done in order to find a cure for diseases/better way of feeding the world/generating power etc.

Re: How was your crunching progress this year?

CJSLMAN -- Good thread! I hadn't recorded where I left off at the end of 2011, so I don't know exactly what I contributed in 2012. However, having seen your thread, I did save my stats on New Year's Eve so that I can monitor my progress in 2013.
