Great, and a kind of SIMAPism being perceived... renovating the past known with the latest known and augment the database, the PDB in this case.

Hi everyone,
you're quite welcome. Also, Rob, thanks for that little mention of SIMAP - I was vaguely aware of the project, just looked it up and read a bit more about it. Thinking that it might be quite useful for something we're trying to do in post-processing grid results for protein function prediction. Cheers, Duncan |

I'm curious about the microbiome part of the project. How do you even approach something like that? There are so many organisms in any given individual and so much potential variability between people that it's hard to imagine how one even gets a handle on it. And that's even before we start talking about different strains of the same bug and other confounding factors.

Hi Twilyth,
Generally, we start getting traction on a project like that by trusting the scientific community. In this case, we look to groups and experts specializing in microbiome genetics, and ask for their advice :-). For example: http://commonfund.nih.gov/hmp/ As to how they approach the problems... good question. Usually, we have some trusted collaborators that we can ask for pointers on where to get started, if no one in our group has the specific background we're looking for. |
