Has all these things made any difference?

Hello, i am not trying to be negative around here, but i was wondering: does all these CPU cycles made any difference? Did we conquer anything yet? I have known the World community Grid for over 5 years.

Can anyone please tell me what we have accomplished?

Re: Has all these things made any difference?

The easiest things to point at are drug candidates. So far we have found 2 drug candidates for the HIV protease molecule for the Fight AIDS @ Home project. Currently Say No To Schistosomiasis is testing 10 new drug candidates: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,34120 GO Fight Against Malaria is checking 2 candidates against 1 target, as posted at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,34265 DDDT Phase 1 found 1 drug candidate for dengue and in a recent post at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,34244 Dr. Watowich reports that Phase 2 has found 'several' drug candidates, 'most' of which are potent against both dengue and West Nile encephalitis.

So there are a number of new drug candidates to be studied and tweaked, which is a measurable difference of sorts. I think that Dr. Foran's Help Defeat Cancer project made a difference by establishing a multi-university research project using computer imaging to classify cancer tissue biopsies and recommend treatments. This is not as measurable as drug candidates but might end up being of equal or greater use. And there are all the other projects which can be classified as basic research.

Re: Has all these things made any difference?

I don't follow the science that closely myself, which is a little weird since I'm really very much a sci-tech groupie. But this is really more about the hardware and competition for me, at least lately anyway.

That said, I'm pretty sure we have a list of all of the publications in peer-reviewed journals where we have contributed to the raw data. I just don't think it's all gathered together like trophies on a shelf. I think that as these things come out, they get mentioned in the applicable thread and that's pretty much it. My impression is that we don't t really make a big deal out of it.

And to that you may respond, 'well, that's sort of my point.' Except you see, that's how scientific research is done. You hear about the grand discoveries but you NEVER hear about the hundreds of lab techs and millions of man/woman hours of painstaking labor that were necessary for that breakthrough.

Newton said it best but I'll just paraphrase. 'If I have achieved anything it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants.' OK, maybe we aren't the giants in that analogy, but hey, the giants have to stand on something too, right?

Usually the 'giant' part comes out as meaning something akin to a nozzle used to apply fluids to ones genitals. Whew. That was close. cool

Since that wasn't in fact the case this time though, it would appear that I've been slacking off and have not been diligent in spamming these forums. For that I do apologize. wink
