I would like suggest the web site statistics indicate where a project current study phase is at verses total likely - estimated calculations. Currently only the todate number of jobs returned and CPU years are indicated. The question therefore is how much more are the study leaders anticipating there to be?
Thanks. |

Hello jdzukley,
Even the project scientists don't know until close to the end. Experience shows that early guesses miss the target. The reasons vary for each project. Scientific research is like that. You can schedule a block of time on a supercomputer and force scientists to use just that time, but the quality of research suffers greatly if you do. Have a good day, Lawrence |

jdzukley, one of the CA's (SekeRob) does attempt to create/keep up to date, a running total of where we are with each science via a whole series of spreadsheets/charts he maintains (see link below for the main 'dashboard' chart). As stated though, these are just estimates - and, as always, things can (and often do) change.

gb009761 Thanks, this was about what I was thinking of.
Lawrence, My experience working in large laboratories performing research suggests that a blanket no response like yours is most often the case where the head of the research team does not want this information public. gb009761 Thanks! I very much appreciate that predicting anything in the future can be variable. I also appreciate from a 30+ working years in projecting outcomes that there can (and often should) be very large detail changes as compared to where a scoped project commences. Establishing current completion "guesses" are none the less required just to establish and maintain expenditure budgets. I would also expect the administrators of WCG to want to know where these project "are" so that they can appropriately plan when to allow new projects to be included. Overall from what I am interrupting from these two responses are that posting and then later updating the current estimates in the stats sheet would likely cause more confusion to the user base inexperienced with these matters then they are likely to benefit. Again, thanks for the link. |
