Re: Pls help debug this app_info for HD6850 on 1090T

I should have mentioned that I can find no stdoutdae.txt anywhere on my C drive and that the only other BOINC directory besides the one in Program Files is one called Boinc_Master in the Users directory.

But I put the data\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org\app_info.xml file there too and restarted BM with no success there either.

The default location of BOINC data-directory is for win7/win2008 c:\programdata\boinc but programdata is a hidden directory and won't show-up in normal listing of directories without also showing hidden directories.

But, it's still possible to type-in c:\programdata\boinc in file-manager and so on, to get to the correct location.

The app_info.xml should go under c:\programdata\boinc\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org\ as default.

After you re-starts BOINC, on one of the first few lines in the log the location of your BOINC data-directory is printed-out, in case you're using something different from the default.

Also, the stdoutdae.txt simply copies the Messages tab so you can always go to the start of Messages and look for the anonymous platform message that wplachy mentioned.

Don't give up. sad

Re: Pls help debug this app_info for HD6850 on 1090T

As lawrencehardin wrote, don't give up as you only have to put the app_info.xml in the correct folder to get it working. In order to locate the correct folder do the following:

1) Shut down the BOINC client

2) Wait about 30 seconds and then restart the BOINC manager. It doesn't make any difference if you do or do not have the app_info.xml in place.

3) Display the Messages/Event Log. If you are running 6.10.58 or less of the client these will be what is in the "Messages" tab in the Advanced view. If you are running 6.12.33 or higher in the Advanced View click on Advanced-->Event Log... from the list at the top of the dialog box (File..View..Tools..Activity..Advanced..)

3) Copy all the lines from the Messages/Event log.

4) Paste them into a reply to this post.

From that we can tell you the specific folder to put it in and how to get there with Windows Explorer.

edit: corrected versions of Messages vs. Event Log

If he is running a version 6 of boinc I highly recommend that he update to version 7.0.36. The newer versions are better optimizes to run GPU apps.

Agreed, but it this point it would seem more prudent to get his app_info.xml working before introducing another variable into the mix. wink

Re: Pls help debug this app_info for HD6850 on 1090T

I didn't get much sleep again so I may not have done everything correctly, but I dl'ed .31 which seems to be the latest I can get without signing up to be an alpha tester.

I installed that and deleted the old stdoutdae.txt file. I found the data directory. Thank you. It shows up but doesn't return results when you do a search. I'm not used to using windows explorer since I normally use powerdesk but that is now crap and i haven't switched to another utility yet.

I put the subdirs and file in Progdata but same old same old. Here is the log file from boinc after a restart.

Re: Pls help debug this app_info for HD6850 on 1090T

All you have to do now is to put the app_info.xml file in the folder

c:\ProgramData\BOINC\Projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org

then shutdown and restart the Boinc client. You should then see the "[World Community Grid] Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform" message in the Event Log.

I've found the easiest way to find my way around the Boinc folders tree structure is to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files, which the Boinc Data File is.

To do this:

1) Click Start and then click on Control Panel

2) Click Folder Options

3) In Folder Options click the View Tab

4) Select Hidden files->Show hidden files, folders, or drives

5) Un-select the Hide extensions for known file types

6) Click Apply

7) Click OK

8) Close the Folder Options dialog

9) Close the Control Panel

Now open Windows Explorer and expand the C:\ProgramData folder. You should see the BOINC folder in it. Then expand the BOINC folder and you should see the Projects folder in it. Expand Projects folder and you should see the www.worldcommunitygrid.org folder in it. Expand that folder and copy your app_info.xml file to that folder. Verify it's in the folder and then double-click it.

A IE window will open and you will see the app_info.xml file nicely formatted and color coded. If you don't it means you have an error I missed reviewing your post.

If all looks good shut down the Boinc client, wait about 30 seconds and then start the Boinc Manager. Look in the Event Log and you will see the using anonymous platform message.

You will then be good to go. Looking at your previous posts it appears you know how to "prime the pump" but if you encounter a problem getting HCC+GPU tasks let me know.

Re: Pls help debug this app_info for HD6850 on 1090T

OK. That was the problem. I don't know if I can still edit the OP but if so I'll put this in there. I NEVER would have figured this out from the instructions but I guess it's obvious to everyone else. D'oh.

Anyway, I now have 28 threads running on 3 7950's plus one Llano APU. I really appreciate the help. Thank you very, very much for all of the help - everyone!

Re: Pls help debug this app_info for HD6850 on 1090T [RESOLVED]

Excellent news twylith. Propose you delete the invalid location folders if not already done.

File Explorer I've set to show the hidden files and folder and extensions. "Show hidden files, folders and drives" in the Options > View window.

For the interested, just checked for Windows 8 which I had clean installed with the 7.0.38 test client, local user, "allow all users". Don't know if the "allow all users" set this off, but the BOINC data dir went to C:\ProgramData\BOINC . As always, the active path is printed in the message/event log at start-up, in case one wonders "Where is it?".
