I don't know if I'll get enough information to do this, but if it's possible, I'll do my best to write a guide so even people who don't know much about programming will be able to construct their own app_info.xml file and install it from a basic template.
----------------------------------------Considering how clueless I am right now that might be a pipe dream, but if you stare at it long enough, the xml stuff isn't really that scary. Maybe I'm delusional but I think I just need a little more basic information. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Nov 12, 2012 4:30:44 AM] |

You are doing OK. Just take it slow and re-read app_info thread a couple times. It will sink in. You have a six cores CPU and a radeon 6850 video card. I see from your badges that you have suupported most research projects. Remember that you can only use your 6850 to process ati_hcc v7.05 WUs for Help Conquer Cancer. if you want to maximize you productivity you have to restrict your rig to Help Conquer Cancer WUs.
----------------------------------------WHat is your aim? What Do you want to achieve? Is your CPU overclocked? What MHz is it running at? Read info at this link regarding Graphics card processing: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=GPU#610 [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 12, 2012 5:25:57 AM] |

If you have read the thread and understand it perhaps you could answer some of my questions?

I read your thread and I cannot determine what it is that you are asking or what it is that you want to achieve. Here are the options for you:
----------------------------------------1- Process 6 CPU WUs 2- Process concurrently (1 x ATI hcc GPU using 1 CPU thread ) + run 5 x other CPU Wus) no app info needed for that with App _info. 3- Process (2 x 0.5 ATI_hcc GPUs using 2 CPU thread) + run 4 other CPU WUs 4- Process (3 x 0.33 ATI_hcc GPUs using 3 CPU thread) + run 3 other CPU WUs 5- Process (4 x 0.25 ATI_hcc GPUs using 4 CPU thread) + run 2 other CPU WUs 6- Process (5 x 0.20 ATI_hcc GPUs using 5 CPU thread) + run 1 other CPU WUs 7- Process (6 x 0.166 ATI_hcc GPUs using 6 CPU thread) Option 6 & 7 may not be available to you. Normally start with # 3 and work up while monitoring your % of GPU use and temperature. In summary app_info sub-divides your GPU. Those sub-divided GPU units are then associated with an available CPU core/thread. ATI/AMD cards only work with HCC GPU files. Left over CPU cores/threads (if any) can be assigned to any other WCG project. Hope that this clarifies things a bit for you. That was one of the few parts I was able to figure out actually, but thank you.

Just a general comment to app_info and reading somewhere a 10 step procedure with a certain emphasis of not removing, whilst. Has anybody actually ever looked at the file ownership and permissions of the app_info.xml ? Certainly have never seen it mentioned, where for sure what's in the projects folder does have a consistent set of what group owns and groups that have access [boinc_admins , boinc_users , boinc_projects]. At least on my systems that's 100% consistent. Can't see if only joe_cruncher has rights [the one who put the file there], how boinc user groups can have access to the file or it's contents.
----------------------------------------errata: Pulled from the official BOINC wiki: Create a file app_info.xml in the project directory. ... inside the Mac's BOINC Data directory, you must set ownership and permissions properly. Why would that not apply to Windows or Linux either? edit: Did some testing on a dummy app_info file placed in projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org and find that certainly on W7 and W8, the group permissions are inherited from the folder settings i.e. the file got the same rights/permissions as the other files in the projects folder. This is Windows 7/8. For Linux to test and for Mac in B&W. Be aware when HCC-GPU comes to latter platform. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 12, 2012 8:32:43 AM] |

Why would that not apply to Windows or Linux either? Can't say for Linux, but atleast for Windows, since GPU-crunching only works for non-service installations (*), BOINC will run as the logged-in user, meaning the logged-in user has access to all the files in the BOINC-data-directory (or BOINC refuses to run at all since have no access at all). If the logged-in user makes/edits an app_info.xml file BOINC will also have access to this file. (*): Well, if you're running the ancient Windows-XP and an ancient BOINC-client, and somehow manages to find a graphics-card-driver not crashing BOINC, it is possible to install as a service and still crunch on your GPU. A quick look on BoincTask reveals only 10.5% of RAC is now from XP-computers and an additional 1.1% from win2003, so for most GPU-crunchers service-installation isn't an option. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. Thought to bring this up, and point as the Mac (Possibly Linux) requirement as well. If not relevant to Windows [user install], great.

I don't want to seem rude and I'm all in favor of getting as much information about these beasties out there as possible, but for the moment, I would very much appreciate it if someone could provide answers to the questions I have posed. I can restate those if it will help condense and focus the discussion.

Atleast one problem you'll hit is with: <platform>windows_x86_64</platform> Since WCG's scheduling-server doesn't correctly handle anonymous platform, it will only issue work for platform windows_intelx86 so you'll need to change this (including both is possible). As long as you're running a 64-bit OS it's no problem you'll still using the 64-bit application. Since you haven't posted any system-info appart for GPU & CPU, XP is a large source of problems while another is if you're not running a BOINC-v7-client. If you're still running v6, upgrade ASAP to atleast v7.0.28 but at the moment v7.0.36 seems to be the best. ![]() "I make so many mistakes.
