Lots of 'Computation Errors' [Resolved]

Hello WCG.

A few minutes ago, I saw my Win7-machine go through HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs and those WUs error-ed out as soon as starting. I hope I didn't happen to have just destroyed my HD7770. d oh

Below is a sample of the message in the event-log:

Re: Lots of 'Computation Errors'

Just checked my results-status for the error-ed HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs and those WUs were all with the same error type:
<core_client_version>7.0.28</core_client_version>

Was the GPU driver corrupted for some reason? I used to have the AMD/ATI GPU-driver version-info indicated at the AMD/ATI's CCC under the Information > Software Update but for the past few days, I've seen AMD Catalyst Not available text indicated there. The HD7770 kept crunching fine though despite that, so I ignored it. Now, it seems I need to take a closer look.. already, my TechPowerUp GPUz is showing incorrect information about the GPU-drivers, and the 'fatal one' is: no check on OpenCL for the HD7770 ! d oh

Re: Lots of 'Computation Errors'

Try 12.11beta4 driver
I'm considering that, but I'm somewhat constrained by what I want for my setup: I want the i7-3770k's integrated-GPU to handle the rendering of the Win7 UI-visuals and drive the monitor, and free the HD7770k to focus on GPU-WUs-crunching. I've seen and got a taste of the best ever performance for my HD7770 with that setup so I'm rather hesitant to let those goodies go. I may explore using a dummy-plug instead of the current two-screens set-up which I continue to wrestle* with to this day, and we'll see how that goes.

Notes:
*The main difficulty is when an image from the 1st-screen crosses the 2nd-screen. The 2 GPUs 'collide' with the Win7-OS caught in the middle as it were and a crash results. These crashes are what probably led to the 'silent' HD7770 GPU-driver corruption until it accumulated to the fatal one today. That was for the extended-desktop scenario. For the desktop-on-only-one-screen scenario, I have to choose the i7-3770k screen for my only desktop but on that scenario, the CCC does not display its full set of controls.

Re: Lots of 'Computation Errors'

Maybe using BoincTasks and a single monitor would be an easier setup to use. Mine works fine.
As for CCC, that too may be part of your problem. IMHO it's buggy and causes way more problems than it's worth, especially driver crashes and BSODs. I never install it.

Re: Lots of 'Computation Errors'

Hi andzgrid,
Search shows lots of posts this last month about error 0xc0000135. The solution was updating software. However, none were for a hardware setup like yours. I suspect you are stressing the drivers past their breaking point.

Re: Lots of 'Computation Errors'

Nano, will the GPU keep crunching if the monitor is unplugged from the computer? Also, will afterburner unlock the settings to make changes? Have trixx installed and it will not let me adjust memory clock.

Re: Lots of 'Computation Errors'

Bearcat, I don't know about afterburner, but I do know that the GPUs keep crunching with the monitor unplugged. I have a dedicated cruncher that rarely gets a monitor/keyboard/mouse plugged into it.

That's good to hear. Trying not to buy another monitor for my new build. Thanks

The BIOS also gets in the way else I've not figured it all out yet: When a GPU is installed on my motherboard and powered, the i7-3770k's integrated-GPU is automatically cut-off. I had to resort to starting the machine with the GPU un-powered and after Win7 boots up to the i7-powered screen, I then manually plug in the power to the GPU, prompting Win7 to detect the GPU and only then apply the GPU-drivers. On the ensuing boot-up, the machine (probably as then directed by the OS) then knows it's a dual-GPU setup and applies the drivers to the respective GPUs. This situation worked fine for some time until I inadvertently have an image from the i7-screen crossover to the HD-screen and kaboom, crash!

Older BIOS are more 'stable', they resume from the last known config/setup. I have the new UEFI BIOS and it behaves differently. I expected the machine to recover from the said crash, but instead, the BIOS forgets the settings and falls back to the original setting, so I had to to do the build-up again. Win7 is forced to agree to the hardware setup the BIOS presents so there you go folks... it's a new world requiring new adjustments. It's kinda fun in a way, and frustrating in other ways. Oh well.. just got to keep on moving things until the problem gives up.. wink
