Re: app_info.xml with all projects

The point is more earned points with more CPU cores assigned to GPU crunching.

The question is if you will reach your HFCC goal without 2 or 4 more cores dedicated to HCC GPU?

Cheers

Re: app_info.xml with all projects

@flodisar, I tried using the HCC GPU + HCC app_info from the XS forum, but I couldn't get it to work. I just got a bunch of error messages and BOINC telling that it didn't need to download new files. So I have to see if I did something wrong. About HFCC, jspace at the XS forum said he's working on this app_info. Maybe he can help out?

If your 7770 is idling most of the time and you have been using it to run the WCG GPU app there is something wrong with your settings.

OK, are there any settings I can change to improve this? I didn't change anything exept for the one to make the GPU crunch while the PC is in use. It is now set to do GPU work all the time.

I'll try to describe the situation. When I have a HCC GPU workunit, the CPU uses about 30 seconds before the GPU 'kicks in'. The GPU then completes the workunit in a little under a minute and then the CPU has to finish the workunit for another minute. So roughly said the GPU is used for about 1 minute and is idling for about 1:30 minute because it's waiting for the CPU starting and finishing the workunit.

And when the GPU is in use, the load never exceeds 85%.

Any toughts on what I can do to improve the load and have less idling time? It's an old i7-920 using 8 threads, and I really would like to use the remaining threads for CPU work...

@depriens, thanks, yes I notices jspace wrote he would be looking at an HFCC app_info. Haven't seen one yet though....

The reason I want it is I would like to reach sapphire on HFCC, but I do not want to sacrifice GPU computing down to a just a single task at a time. At the moment I am running 6 GPU tasks in parallel on my HD7970 (upped it from four today). Seems to be working, will have to wait for stats to udate to see if made any difference in output capacity. When all six tasks are running on GPU I have a utilization of ~96%. And that is an HD7970 running at 1160MHz core and 7000MHz RAM.
Do you guys and gals believe there is a point in increasing even more to 8 or 10 parallel GPU tasks?

Yes, I run 9 GPU tasks with my 7950. More tasks = better CPU load = less potential idle time between work units. After all, you can't keep that utilization at 96% all the time. You might want to reduce GPU VRAM to reduce power consumption, GPU VRAM does nothing to improve times. System RAM, however, does.

If you have the cpu cores to cover your gpu wu's, then raise it. My 7870 is crunching 8 now and know your card handles it better.

Re: app_info.xml with all projects

It's in the folder ...\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org

Did you have tasks in cache when you put the app_info file into the projects folder?

I don't so. I stop and re-start BOINC.

I need a better explanation of exactly what you're doing step by step.

1) Edit and save the app_info file.
2) Exit BM and close the tasks (verified in task manager).
3) Restart BM.

Are you still getting the | File referenced in app_info.xml does not exist: wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86 error when you do that and are you trying to run HCC GPU tasks only?

I get that message at the restart of BM. I'm trying to run both HCC GPU and CPU tasks.

Re: app_info.xml with all projects

I get that message at the restart of BM. I'm trying to run both HCC GPU and CPU tasks.

There is only 1 way I know of to cure that. Set WCG to receive no new tasks and let it finish whatever tasks it can.(or you could just abort them all and start over) Shut down Boinc and remove the app_info file and save it. When you do that any remaining tasks, whether CPU or GPU will be lost. Detach and the reattach to WCG.( a reset will not work) Let it download some new CPU and GPU tasks. When you have some of each new task suspend all of them. Shut down boinc, place the app_info file back into the project folder and restart boinc and resume your tasks. If the syntax of your app_info is correct you should now be able to run both GPU and CPU tasks.

Re: app_info.xml with all projects

Nano, seems anyone trying to crunch both creates issues. Maybe have them get the GPU working first, then add CPU wu's afterwards. Everytime I tried both, got nothing but issues. After your help, and a new 7870, doing 8 without issues doing over 500,000 ppd.

[ot]Could you, please, recommend some reliable application for monitoring of temperatures (including openCL GPU) for Win 7 (64)?

Thanks in advance[/ot]
