Fellow crunchers, I was hoping to get some advice for a new build in the $2,500 range. The machine will run 24/7 on the WCG, and I'm wanting to achieve the absolute maximum points/day within that budget.
----------------------------------------Naturally I assume this means going with a server configuration? I am considering going with a dual 16-core Opertron set-up and 16GB of ram. Is there anything I need to be aware of in regards to that number of cores/threads? Also, I assume that I'll get more production out of such a system, than say, a single fully-overlocked Intel 3970x? Also, does anyone know if there's any room for overlocking the opertron server processors, or is that not advisable? Thanks in advance! ![]() |

If it's maximum points you're after, I'd suggest a 3770k loaded with four 7970 graphics cards. Don't forget the 1500W power supply.

Or, maybe two $1250 PCs? divide and conquer

Thanks for the input so far. Alas this particular build has to be a single machine, otherwise I would most certainly go with the multi, value machine route.
----------------------------------------Also, I can't go with a GPU oriented rig for a number of reasons, so let's assume that's off the table. (Also right now isn't it only the HCC project that supports GPUs?) So with that in mind, is it preferable to go with the dual 16-core Opertron system, some dual mid-range Intel server cpu set-up, or a single 3960/70x? ![]() |

If you don't OC, you will want the highest Ghz xeon processors (if you want server grade) you can afford. Unless you invest in a SR-2 motherboard to do it. Expensive. I chose dual xeon westmeres but didn't want to OC.I have two of them. But only have one X16 PCI-E slot so am limited on GPU crunching. AMD is a bit slower on their server chips. Not sure if you can OC them.
----------------------------------------You will need to decide what you want in a cruncher, ie.. more cpu cores or GPU power, to crunch with. A single hex (non server) with two x-16 slots would be a serious cruncher. OCable too. Am building a 3770 system now to put two GPU's in it to crunch only GPU wu's as this is less expensive than server systems. Will use my 2 dually systems for cpu only work. Good luck. ![]()

Here is a sweet deal you could build. Probably 3 with what your allocating.
