Say No to Schistosomiasis project update Oct 22, 2012

We have some updates about our Say No to Schistosomiasis project on World Community Grid.

  • So far, we have 10 new compounds being tested in vitro. Test results will be made available as soon as the tests are completed. We have another 16 potential compounds being evaluated for testing. Of the candidates being tested, the most promising is based on Digoxin.
  • At Inforium University we created a new master program on using these drug screening methods. The program is called "Professional Masters on Information Technology applied to Computational Biology" and is being coordinated by myself (Rosangela Silqueira Hickson Rios). The target audience is professionals from upper level courses in the fields of exact sciences, health sciences or biological sciences, interested in the study of biological problems at different scales and levels of complexity in the scope of computational biology and systems biology.
  • We participated for 13th International Symposium on Schistosomiasis. The abstract for my poster can be found here: http://pide.cpqrr.fiocruz.br/iss2012/

Thanks to the many members of World Community Grid for contributing to this project.

That's truly fantastic news - lets hope that something comes out of all these new potential leads that are being found.

Please keep up the good news, as everyone here really enjoys the feedback we get from "the frontline" (i.e. the scientists behind all the WU's we're crunching).

Thank-you for keeping us informed, Dr Hickson. It helps to make the project "real" -- to motivate us to contribute our computer time towards your project, and to feel that the research is actually getting towards something useful.

Please keep the updates coming.

Thank you for the update! We love to hear what "our" scientists are doing and how our results are being used!

Thanks for the update. They are always appreciated.

I remember an elderly member of my family being prescribed Digoxin many years ago for heart problems. Good to see that it might be possible to apply it to something new.

Digoxin is used for heart problems too.
Digoxin is a compound very similar to praziquantel, used for S. mansoni.

Dr Hickson,

Thanks for your post - it's nice to see that when combined, our little efforts lead to actual results. Looking forward to further updates.

Regards, Igor
