WCG for Windows has stopped working

OK, not sure if this is the correct section...so move this if needed

recently one of my devices is not running at all

when i try to open WCG/ BOINC from the normal desktop icons, it seems to open ok, but I get a message about no project attached.

So I tried to follow the prompts and was going to attempt to attach a project [also offered option to attach account manager, but I was going to start with project attachment and see what happens...]

So I click ok/next and then BOINC gets all color faded and I get a pop up about how 'WCG for Windows has stopped working' and windows will now close this program. I click ok, it gets shut down by windows. One odd part is the icon in the tray will linger for hours until i hover over it, then it finally flushes the icon [i see WCG icon with red center indicating its open but not running/ connected]

I have seen this 'red' icon in the past, and I usually have to close / reopen BOINC/ WCG to get it to restart properly. This device usually gets hung up when I have just rebooted the PC. I have lost entire days of WCG time due to BOINC not starting up / crashing after a PC restart.

Any ideas on what I need to do to get this device running again?

I tried skimming the forums for info but have found nothing related so far. If its there please point me in the right direction!

Thanks!

Re: WCG for Windows has stopped working

Hello ShadowMasterCM,
Sometime or other in the last 8 years, I have seen that red dot, but not recently. So you have an unusual situation. I would recommend a complete uninstall, then a reinstall. Never use an Account Manager with WCG. We have not implemented all the necessary functions on the server.

Re: WCG for Windows has stopped working

yeah well I really had no idea what it was or did...was simply one of the default options available with the BOINC manager and so on. For the most part, I simply use default everything to start with.
I only recently read up on the forums about loading more than default into the tasks after CFSW shut down so 'suddenly' and now I wont get that badge! [sniff sniff]. I also finally found those various charts and so forth right about the time he was trying to sort out the issue with the picture hosting site...so I was a bit confused for a while there...
as far as that 'red' dot on the icon, it will occur any time the BOINC client is not correctly connected/ loaded. As I stated above, not really being sure in the past what all the attachment process was about, I simply closed BOINC and restarted it, and it would seem to correct whatever the issue was, until this past week.
So I poked around some more in directions other than this support forum and I ended up at the berkley website for BOINC...

noticed that I was running version 6.x and the site said 7.x was out and to update etc...so I just did.
After a bit on comm delays, it finally connected me to WCG and then eventually asked me for my account info. Local prefs seemed to have transfered to the update as well.

However, it loaded all new tasks...are my tasks from the v6.x install still around here on my HD, or does the upgrade trash all of them?

The good part is that its now running BOINC again, and its crunching v7.x now!

Re: WCG for Windows has stopped working

I experience from time to time a similar problem but only on one particular system: Ubuntu 10.04 x64, Athlon II.
I operate other Ubuntu-based and WinXP-Pro-based systems using Phenom II or Core2 CPU without trouble.
I was never able to understand what caused the boinc stop.
Cheers,
Yves

Same here on only one system and only very occasionally. Linux Mint 12. Not really often enough to be bothersome.

Re: WCG for Windows has stopped working

I have an older box running Vista and BOINC 7.0.31 that will periodically disconnect from host and the icon will also stick around until I hover my mouse over. However, I can relaunch BOINC and it continues to work again. I have seen this happen more on boxes that have little resources or is slow compared to modern day systems.

Re: WCG for Windows has stopped working

OK, so it seems my issue is not really resolved...
I have determined that my original WCG software did in fact 'stop' processing my old work units, as they eventually appeared in my results stats as 'No Reply'...so I just assummed that WCG / BOINC had dumped them in the install of BOINC v7
We you know what they say about assuming...
Seems that I have actually installed a NEW BOINC manager, and it crunched for several days as expected.
Then I rebooted my PC for non related issues, and when it started up, it opened BOINC v7, but it also now opened WCG v6, so I now have 2 managers trying to crunch the same work units.
Apparently installing BOINC v7 also created a new device...rather than simply updating the existing device...
So before I try to update all the other devices I have to BOINC v7...can someone please tell me exactly how I do this, so that I do the upgrade but avoid duplicating all my device installs!

Re: WCG for Windows has stopped working

well it seems the v7 BOINC program didnt want to play nice on my PC after all. It may have been simply because both programs where running at once, but it was the v7 program, and its screensaver, that kept crashing my PC.
So I finally uninstalled the v7 program, which of course wiped out all the work in progress [AGAIN!], but now the original WCG manager seems to be handling things as it used to.
Is there an easier way to upgrade these managers? I would like to actually run the latest version of BOINC software, but if this is how you have to upgrade, I will actually avoid updates.
What is the difference between the WCG manager and this other one I got directly from Berkley? They seem to do the same job, but look and act very differently from the GUI perspective.

Re: WCG for Windows has stopped working

Interesting, I would uninstall the 6.x version. Don't know if it applies to WCG but with CPDN things don't work if you try and downgrade from 7.x to 6.x. I did read an explanation as to why but can't remember anything about it. When I upgrade on linux, I usually download the latest version, unzip the file and copy the files over the top of whatever is there and it seems to work.

If you switch from the WCG custom kit to the Berkeley standard kit, you have to uninstall WCG-BOINC first. There's a few differences that prevent a direct upgrade to remove all the WCG BOINC client parts. Upgrading from 6 to 7 in terms of data should now be loss-less with 7.0.31 [latest Berkeley officially recommended is still 7.0.28, but .31 is the one for good clean installing on W8]. Downgrading from 7 to 6 causes data wipeout. The BOINC control files have substantially changed, of which 6 is obviously totally oblivious to.
