Since the partial shutdown of BOINC last weekend things on my PCs seem to have changed. I have the Additional Work Buffer set at 2.5 days and before last weekend I had lots of tasks "ready to start" (2.5 days worth).
----------------------------------------Now, the number of tasks "ready to start" is vastly reduced and when I click on Projects > Update I get a message (in Messages) stating that "this computer has reached a limit on tasks in progress" Other messages state that " tasks for NVIDIA GPU and tasks for AMD/ATI GPU are available but your preferences are not set to accept them" I have never seen these messages before and have never had any problems with the Additional Work Buffer before last weekend. Something has clearly changed since last weekend and I'm not sure how to get back to the original settings. I notice that there is another thread relating to this subject but I just wondered if this has been some sort of glitch at the WCG end because things seem to be much less efficient that they were previously. Is this something that WCG are working on to try to get back to the simple system that used to run?

Not much has changed, but for a measure to prevent some computers to get flooded with work while participating in GPU computing.
1) Hopefully temporary, the maximum CPU work buffer is now 10 per processor thread, so a quad can have 4x10 [which shows as "in progress" on the My Grid > Result Status pages 2) The maximum "in progress" for a GPU is per member reports 60. 3) The above 2 enhanced messages were added [replacing simple ones], to tell why a computer is not getting work for either it's NVidia or ATI/AMD GPU. (See post by knreed, http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,34054] So, when you see "this computer has reached a limit on tasks in progress" it means your computer has the maximum number of jobs. Your computer will automatically connect to report completed work and backfill, meaning if a quad would drop below 40 and the BOINC scheduler thinks it's time to talk to the servers, it will fetch more work to top up to the maximum allowed for a device [as controlled by the server]. |

Thanks for that, Rob.
----------------------------------------The thing that concerns most people that I've spoken to is this seemingly new bit about GPU crunching. I believe it has always been there but hidden away. I changed my settings a few days ago to now include GPU crunching by checking the box on Device Profiles but there has been no change. Should there have been? WCG was so easy........ download the software and let it get on with it. Now things seem so complicated that it seems like a backward step. Everyone wants it back like it was.

Everyone wants it back like it was. ....no they don't so stop putting words in my mouth! GPU processing has been under test for months now so I do not know where you have been hiding. It is much more efficient and saves time and money. |

Only by choice e.g. enabling GPU computing in Preferences, does it become slightly more complicated. For a new user "download and start crunching" is still the default setting. |

If I may add my two penn'th:
As someone who cannot do GPU processing (both of my GPUs are two puny) I have not been following the GPU fora and was not aware of the change limiting the queue to 10 jobs per "core". Therefore I have to agree that this could have been better communicated. There is, however, still time for one of the techs to post details of this change somewhere a little more visible, and to update it once a final solution has been arrived at. HINT !! |

If I may add additional 2 eurocents:
----------------------------------------Agree with you Apis, I also do not follow GPU threads. But the issue has been crunched in app. 3 more threads outside of GPU forum and in the first of them there is the link I posted above. Cheers and NI! ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. If it's been under test for months that doesn't mean that everyone will neccessarily know about it. I have not seen any announcements about it and nor has anyone else that I've spoken to. It seems strange that these changes have been implemented without any warning. It would have been nice to have been told how and why the changes were coming and how to start GPU crunching. ----------------------------------------
