AMD Hexacore CPU

Hi:

I am toying with the idea getting a desktop system with an AMD Hexacore (cpu with 8 cores) but I am not sure how BONIC would react this cpu. For example, if I purchased a system with an AMD FX 8120 cpu, due to hyper-threading would this processor do (8 x 2) = 16 BONIC workunits at once?

Would really appreciate an answer from someone who is currently using one of these CPUs to process BONIC workunits.

Re: AMD Hexacore CPU

A quad core w/ hyperthreading will run 8 (4x2) WUs at a time.
A hexa core w/ hyperthreading will run 12 (6x2) WUs at a time.
etc.

Hi cehunt.

AMD cpu's don't have hyperthreading so what you see is what you get is
8 cores = 8 threads = 8 tasks, sorry to say not very fast ones for crunching.

P.P.L. & Piroque:

I want to Thank You both of you for your answers to my question. In this case, I am going to stay with Intel CPUs which have hyperthreading build in. I am going to save my money. I currently have both a quad core desktop and a i7 laptop crunching for WCG so I am doing my little bit.

Re: AMD Hexacore CPU

I personally like Intel due to the fact of Hyper-threading. I have a laptop of 4 cores which has a total of 8 logical cores, and a server with 2 hex cores processors for a total of 12 cores per CPU, so, if you would like to crunch 2 units per physical core, get an Intel CPU.

AND lots of ram to go with it! 8GB of ram probably will not do it if you want to run 8 units at once and have the pc be responsive too. I have been putting 16GB of ram in my 6 and 8 core machines and it seems to be okay. Crunching 8 cpu units, one or two gpu units plus running the OS is just asking for serious lags in Windows with only 8GB of ram!!

Re: AMD Hexacore CPU

Actually, my PC is responsive with just 8GB of RAM. I crunch for The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 on my laptop with 4 cores with hyperthreading for a total of 8 cores with just 8gb of ram and also keep my GPU busy with work. What happens with GPU is that my machine is dual graphics with nVidia Optimus, which makes BOINC use nVidia for workunits but for everything else it uses Intel Graphics until I specify a software to run on nvidia. Really my machine is really responsive. Not to mention that my OS runs on an mSATA III SSD.

Re: AMD Hexacore CPU

Neither have I got any considerable responsiveness issue even with 8 CEP2 concurrent and 8GB RAM (7.7 usable per BOINC) on a 2670QM. It's just that the efficiency when in use drops, of CEP2, but 8 concurrent at night runs 99% on W7-64. Mind you, this is the latest in entertainment hardware at that. (10 months old). With any other WCG science... I sometimes check if BOINC is actually running, when playing stream feeds, as than I can't hear the fan ;P
