DFSL tasks are also very fast these days in both Windows 64 Bits and Linux 64 Bits:

I remember about this discussion about two years ago at least about the terrible speed difference between Window base solutions and Linux. The gap was even greater before and now with Win7 64bit it has become somewhat smaller and there are also differences with each project.

At that time and even today I do not understand very well why there is such a difference induced by the operating system.

We have the same CPU who does the effective crunching. Is the scientific code (compiled I suppose) that runs on the CPU different between the Win7 version and Linux. It should not be the case as the CPU is the same. That there are some differences I can understand as the environment Win7 and Linux are different, but in no way is for me still such a performance difference understandable.

The only way to explain this is to say that Windows does use for its own activity, and system management twice as much the CPU power that Linux requires. That also seems strange. When I leave my Win7 system idle, CPU load goes down drastically and moves to 100% when Boinc is fired.
Logically when Win7 is idle we should be at 50% CPU load to justify the difference between Linux and W7.
My reasoning is maybe too simple and based on my experiences at a time where OS systems were much much much more simple. biggrin

Re: SN2S+DSFL+GFAM: Anyone else seeing the 64bit version racing on Linux compared to Windows?

No, it's the compiler libraries that can be used and the hundreds of [optimization] parms to choose from during compile, *without* corrupting the result, for which it is paramount that all results of all platforms must be as close to each other as possible as not to turn the whole database into GO after GI and nothing being consistent.

64 bits: The driver was to get pure 64 bit (Linux) systems to participate [There was no 64 bit HCC1 made to top it off]. Whilst the techs, really everyone, would love to get equal or close performance across platforms, it is not the biggest driver v.v. Windows. Windows supports 32 bit out of the box and the performance differential on that platform is 4-8%, sometimes even negative. The 32 bit version was nearly par for all the platforms, so the known gain on Windows was historically limited. Indeed the 64 bit runs [for me at least] that little margin faster on W7 and W8.

To flodisar, please read back the thread where I said that this topic could as well be stickied over all ViNA projects forums. ViNA run tops on *Nix platforms. When in Linux mode, my clients run ViNA near exclusively.

Re: SN2S+DSFL+GFAM: Anyone else seeing the 64bit version racing on Linux compared to Windows?

Currently doing SNS2_v6.2, and HCC_v7.05 on my Ubu12.10. The HCC-WUs there have a narrower range in their completion-times of 2.5hrs to 3hrs compared to SNS2's at less-than-3hrs to 6hrs. I wish the completion-times per SNS2-WUs be cut in half, so broadly 1.5hrs to 3hrs completion-time for SNS2-WUs -- which would put SNS2 competitive with HCC in the completion-time department.

Re: SN2S: Anyone else seeing the 64bit version racing on Linux compared to Windows?

I have noticed rather large discrepencies in run time between W7 and the iMac running snow leopard. The imac has a slower processor but finishes units in about half the time. I just figured it had better optimizations and kind of forgot about it until I saw this topic.

Optimizing compiler plus math libraries make the difference. Linux projects used to run slower than Windows projects, then they suddenly ran much faster. Perhaps Mac OS X has also gotten updated compilers.

Re: SN2S: Anyone else seeing the 64bit version racing on Linux compared to Windows?

All interesting stuff. I last tried Linux processing about two years ago and would like to build another PC for Linux: too much learning for an old guy, however. I will have to stick with Win 7 64 bit and trail the Linux machines. That's me you see in your rear view mirrors, Linux drivers.....
crying

I have not processed any SN2S tasks since December 2012 and am now returning. In addition to the 18.6M points/credits shown for WCG, I have 24.0M credits for other projects, so I have not been idle…..

GPUGrid - 10.9M
POEM - 9.4M
Folding – 2.0M (that’s many, many, many hours crunching…..)
Others – 1.7M
