FWIW, my machine (i7-2600) can finish 8 CPU WUs in ~1 hr, which comes out to 7.5 mins each. The GPU WUs running on my AMD 6950 finish in ~3 mins on avg.
Crunching both together, where 7 CPU WUs + 20 GPU WUs can finish in an hour comes out to a 2.4x throughput gain. Not too shabby. Hope other projects will port their code as well. Add'l obs. Power consumption went from 200W to 270W and turned my machine into a space heater. That 70W boosted throughput 2.4x. Interesting. |

As I recall, though this is only by memory, each HCC work unit took about 90 minutes on each core of my E8400 at 3.0 GHz. But it is taking only 2 minutes 45 seconds on my Radeon HD 7770, for an increase of at least 33 times.

As far as the impact of GPU on the project, here is data on success results returned in the past 2 hours:
If we estimate 24 hours of results for CPU we get ~220,000 which is the same pace that we were previously completing results for the project. If we estimate 24 hours of results for GPU we get ~375,000. That is a VERY nice increase in work accomplished for the project. |

Hi SekeRob, yes I'm currently in two minds as to whether to push on to try for a Sapphire HCC badge or not. If I go "full bore", I'm estimating that I'd need ~120 days of CPU supply - although as I'd also like to work on the VINA based projects at the same time, make that 240 days. Thus, methinks it'll be a HPF2 Sapphire badge I'll be working on in the very near future... You just need MORE POWER! More pc's will get you there FASTER!! BUT they will also raise your electric bill AND can make for some HOT TO THE TOUCH wall outlet plates!!! Hot wall outlet plates is a BAD thing!!! ![]() ![]() |

Any plan on requiring new projects to go GPU only or is it based on the particular project science that will dictate what can be used?

Well, on my GPU, it runs in 2 minutes or less, where the CPU would run in a hour. So, Im blasting through workunits right now.

Hello Bearcat, the advantages of GPU processing are dependent on the underlying algorithms utilized by the research project. Please review this FAQ. Take care. Tedi |

Latest estimate is now 688 days (down from 730 two days ago when the GPU was released).
----------------------------------------I am not sure how the calculation is made but I would have expected this to have reduced significantly to maybe around 230 days based on the increased throughput of work units ? Kind regards Lufty [Edit 2 times, last edit by LUFTY at Oct 13, 2012 4:20:18 PM] |

CP, actually I forgot, but it is very likely a "trimmed" mean, so long as there is strong growth, the top/bottom days get dismissed in a time-series before the average is computed [this is to catch days also where stats fail and the next day double results are reported. This noon hints at pushing for three-quarter million validations [noon shows 371,339], and it's only Sunday. The 0.75M would thus by anticipation, be excluded from the speed calculation... but, yesterday full day led to a drop from 688 to 638 ;P
(Got an announcement note showing in my v7 client on this new venture, so the word is arriving to any v7 client that has WCG attached. Expect more Spaceball effects to kick in) |
